Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic mechanism that results in parent-of-origin monoallelic expression of specific genes, which precludes uniparental development and underlies various diseases. Here, we explored molecular and developmental aspects of imprinting in humans by generating exclusively paternal human androgenetic embryonic stem cells (aESCs) and comparing them with exclusively maternal parthenogenetic ESCs (pESCs) and bi-parental ESCs, establishing a pluripotent cell system of distinct parental backgrounds. Analyzing the transcriptomes and methylomes of human aESCs, pESCs, and bi-parental ESCs enabled the characterization of regulatory relations at known imprinted regions and uncovered imprinted gene candidates within and outside known imprinted regions.

TRATAVE, the company responsible for operating the system, designed and implemented a monitoring network to measure discharges along the entire drainage network and treatment facilities in order to reduce those water inflows. Several flow measurement devices were installed at strategic locations within the sewer network and integrated with a SCADA system responsible for its operation.

In Brazil's Amazon region, studies have already identified the common use of illicit drugs among adolescents and the high prevalence of HCV infections among PWUIDs. However, all studies done with PWUIDs were conducted with small samples and within limited geographic coverage.

However, ethical problems and their idiosyncrasies need to be further explored.
Aim: The objectives of this study were, first, to obtain a transcultural Portuguese-language adaptation and validation of the Ethical Conflict Nursing Questionnaire-Critical Care Version and, second, to analyse Portuguese critical care nurses' level of exposure to ethical conflict and its characteristics.
Introduction And Aim: Studies have shown that two polymorphisms were associated with steatosis and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in different populations: the Patatin-like Phospholipase Domain Containing 3 (PNPLA3) and Transmembrane 6 Superfamily Member 2 (TM6SF2). However, the frequency and significance of these polymorphisms in an admixed population, i.e.

These factors include dispersal capability, environmental filters and geographic distance. Using 520 haemosporidian parasite genetic lineages recovered from 7,534 birds sampled across tropical and temperate South America, we tested (a) the latitudinal diversity gradient hypothesis and (b) the distance-decay relationship (decreasing proportion of shared species between communities with increasing geographic distance) for this host-parasite system.

Their relatively high rates of mutation and recombination frequencies allow them to adapt to new hosts and ecological niches. Although Brazil has 18% of global avian species diversity, studies regarding the presence of avian viral diseases in wild birds in South America are scarce.

Materials & Methods: Liposomal nanoformulations of the copper complex were characterized in terms of thermodynamic behavior (differential scanning calorimeter), pH-sensitivity (spectrophotometry) and antiproliferative effects against murine melanoma B16F10 cells in vitro. Preclinical studies were performed in a C57BL/6 syngeneic melanoma model.

The focus of outcome assessment after ICH has been mortality in most studies, because of the high early case fatality which reaches 40% in some population-based studies. The most robust and consistent predictors of early mortality include age, severity of neurological impairment, hemorrhage volume and antithrombotic therapy at the time of the event.

This review presents an updated description of nanotheranostic formulations under development for skin cancer (including melanoma), head and neck, thyroid, breast, gynecologic, prostate, and colon cancers, brain-related cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. With this focus, we appraised the clinical advantages and drawbacks of metallic, polymeric, and lipid-based nanosystems, such as low invasiveness, low toxicity to the surrounding healthy tissues, high precision, deeper tissue penetration, and dosage adjustment in a real-time setting.

Background: Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) permit the use of interferon (IFN)-free regimens to treat hepatitis C (HCV) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemo-dialysis (HD) or renal transplant (RTx) recipients, with excellent response rates and safety. However, the occurrence of basal or therapy-induced resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) to DAAs can result in treatment failure. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of RASs to NS3A, NS5A and NS5B inhibitors, and particularly the Q80K polymorphism, in CKD patients on HD and RTx recipients infected with HCV.

This study describes inpatients with suspected and confirmed Influenza A H1N1 infection who were prescribed oseltamivir, the risk factors associated with infection, the association between infection and mortality, and the factors associated with in-hospital mortality in infected patients.
Methods: This study was a matched case-control study of hospitalized patients who underwent real-time polymerase chain reaction testing for Influenza A H1N1 and were treated with oseltamivir from 2009 to 2015 in a tertiary care hospital.

Sleep disturbances in modern life lead to cognitive and motor performance impairments in everyday tasks such as gait. The most common symptom of these disturbances is daytime sleepiness, which can be assessed by questionnaires such as the Epworth Sleep Scale (ESS). The ESS evaluates sleep health and daytime dysfunction.

The immunohistochemical test for p16INK4a is used as an indicator of the presence of HPV and as a prognostic marker for squamous cell carcinomas in various sites. However, the role of this marker in penile carcinoma has not yet been completely elucidated.

Usually, during large outbreaks of dengue and other pathogens that can cause acute febrile illnesses, the search for secondary pathogens with similar disease outcomes is rare.
Methods: Using total RNA sequencing and targeted diagnostic assays, we discovered an outbreak of parvovirus B19 in dengue-suspected patients that occurred from November 2013 to February 2014.
Background And Purpose: Post-stroke dysphagia occurs in up to three quarters of patients with acute stroke and is associated with a higher risk of respiratory infections and poor outcome. Systematic screening of dysphagia in the acute stroke unit is essential to identify patients at risk of aspiration and to provide dietary recommendations. Our study aimed to assess the impact of the systematic application of the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) in patients with acute ischaemic stroke.

Objective: To compare the components of the aortic pulse wave (APW) and the hemodynamic parameters among children and adolescents with DM1 and healthy individuals.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, with 36 children and adolescents diagnosed with DM1 (11.
Objective: Whether intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) associated with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC-ICH) has a better outcome compared to ICH associated with vitamin K antagonists (VKA-ICH) is uncertain.
Methods: We performed a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis of cohort studies comparing clinical and radiological outcomes between NOAC-ICH and VKA-ICH patients. The primary outcome measure was 30-day all-cause mortality.
Background: The use of point-of-care testing (POCT) in different clinical applications is justified by the fact that the time to release the result is shortened, allowing the physician to define the diagnosis and most appropriate therapy in a shorter time. However, the negative aspects must also be highlighted and studied so that we can move forward with the use of these devices. These negative aspects include greater analytical imprecision compared to laboratory automation, the variability between different equipment from different manufacturers, the risk of inappropriate use, a low level of global regulation, higher costs compared with laboratory testing and cost ineffectiveness in terms of health care.
