Metal complexes are emerging as promising alternatives to traditional platinum-based cancer treatments, offering reduced side effects. However, understanding their cellular uptake and distribution and quantifying their presence at the single cell level remains challenging. Advanced imaging techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence, and energetic ion beam-based nuclear microscopy (scanning transmission ion microscopy, particle-induced X-ray emission, elastic backscattering spectrometry), allow detailed high-resolution visualization of structure and morphology, high sensitivity for elemental detection with quantification within single cells, and the construction of 3D models of metal distribution, positioning them as powerful tools for assessing the cellular uptake and compartmentalization of complexes.

Anticancer drugs inhibit DNA replication by intercalating between DNA base pairs, forming covalent bonds with nucleotide bases, or binding to the DNA groove. To develop safer drugs, novel molecular structures with alternative binding mechanisms are essential. Stable boron hydrides offer a promising alternative for cancer therapy, opening up additional options like boron neutron capture therapy based on B and thermal neutron beams or proton boron fusion therapy using B and proton beams.

Monoanionic gold bis(dithiolene) complexes were recently shown to display activity against ovarian cancer cells, Gram-positive bacteria, strains and the rodent malaria parasite, . To date, only monoanionic gold(III) bis(dithiolene) complexes with a thiazoline backbone substituted with small alkyl chains have been evaluated for biomedical applications. We now analyzed the influence of the length and the hydrophobicity hydrophilicity of these complexes' alkyl chain on their anticancer and antiplasmodial properties.
