Multidisciplinary Development and Implementation of a Trial of Void Algorithm to Standardize and Reduce Indwelling Urethral Catheter Use.

Introduction: Prolonged indwelling catheter use is a known risk factor for catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs). We sought to reduce catheter use by creating and implementing a trial of void (TOV) algorithm to standardize indwelling Foley catheter removal in surgical patients.

Methods: We partnered with the Departments of General Surgery and Nursing to develop an evidence-based TOV algorithm for a step-down unit at a large urban teaching hospital.

Nano-enabled delivery of diosgenin and emodin ameliorates respirable silica dust-induced pulmonary fibrosis silicosis in rats.

Oxidative stress and inflammation play a fundamental role in the beginning and advancement of silicosis. Hence, questing active phytocompounds (APCs) with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties such as diosgenin (DG) and emodin (ED) can be a therapeutic intervention targeting silica-induced pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. Hydrophobicity and low bioavailability are the barriers that restrict the therapeutic efficacy of DG and ED against pulmonary defects.

Safety of multi-access site venous closure following catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and flutter.

Background: Following catheter ablation, vascular access management involves potential complications and prolonged recovery. Recently, suture-mediated closure (SMC) devices were approved for venous access procedures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety of a commercially available SMC for multiple access site venous closure by duplex ultrasound (DUS) in asymptomatic subjects with non-visible complications.

Comparative Analyses and Ablation Efficiency of Thulium Fiber Laser by Stone Composition.

Purpose: There are limited data on ablation effects of thulium fiber laser (TFL) settings with varying stone composition. Similarly, little is known surrounding the photothermal effects of TFL lithotripsy regarding the chemical and structural changes after visible char formation. We aim to understand the TFL's ablative efficiency across various stone types and laser settings, while simultaneously investigating the photothermal effects of TFL lithotripsy.

Traumatic brain injury and immunological outcomes: the double-edged killer.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide resulting from falls, car accidents, sports, and blast injuries. TBI is characterized by severe, life-threatening consequences due to neuroinflammation in the brain. Contact and collision sports lead to higher disability and death rates among young adults.

One-year Outcomes of XIENCE Skypoint 48-mm Drug-Eluting Stents in Long Coronary Lesions: The SPIRIT 48 Trial.

Background: Diffuse coronary artery disease may need multiple overlapping stents, associated with less favorable outcomes than those of a single stent. The availability of longer stents can circumvent the need for overlapping stents in long lesions. This prospective, single-arm, SPIRIT 48 trial evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Abbott's next-generation drug-eluting stent, XIENCE Skypoint 48, in patients with coronary artery disease with long de novo native coronary lesions.

Exploring the role of cerebrospinal fluid as analyte in neurologic disorders.

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear ultrafiltrate of blood that envelopes and protects the central nervous system while regulating neuronal function through the maintenance of interstitial fluid homeostasis in the brain. Due to its anatomic location and physiological functions, the CSF can provide a reliable source of biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of different neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and primary and secondary brain malignancies. The incorporation of CSF biomarkers into the drug discovery and development can improve the efficiency of drug development and increase the chances of success.

Air quality and health co-benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation actions by 2030: an interdisciplinary modeling study in Ahmedabad, India.

Climate change-driven temperature increases worsen air quality in places where coal combustion powers electricity for air conditioning. Climate solutions that substitute clean and renewable energy in place of polluting coal and promote adaptation to warming through reflective cool roofs can reduce cooling energy demand in buildings, lower power sector carbon emissions, and improve air quality and health. We investigate the air quality and health co-benefits of climate solutions in Ahmedabad, India-a city where air pollution levels exceed national health-based standards-through an interdisciplinary modeling approach.

MTAP loss: a possible therapeutic approach for glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma is the most lethal form of brain tumor with a recurrence rate of almost 90% and a survival time of only 15 months post-diagnosis. It is a highly heterogeneous, aggressive, and extensively studied tumor. Multiple studies have proposed therapeutic approaches to mitigate or improve the survival for patients with glioblastoma.

Mediastinal irradiation and valvular heart disease.

Anticancer therapy has the potential to cause unwanted cardiovascular side effects. Utilization of radiation therapy to treat tumors near the heart can result in radiation-induced valvular heart disease among other cardiovascular pathologies. The aim of this review is to describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk prediction, non-invasive imaging modalities and management of radiation-induced valvular heart disease with a focus on pre-operative risk assessment and contemporary treatment options.

Anomaly Detection Framework for Wearables Data: A Perspective Review on Data Concepts, Data Analysis Algorithms and Prospects.

Wearable devices use sensors to evaluate physiological parameters, such as the heart rate, pulse rate, number of steps taken, body fat and diet. The continuous monitoring of physiological parameters offers a potential solution to assess personal healthcare. Identifying outliers or anomalies in heart rates and other features can help identify patterns that can play a significant role in understanding the underlying cause of disease states.

Harnessing the epic electronic medical record to track indwelling ureteral stents in a pediatric population.

Introduction: Retention of indwelling ureteral stents due to loss to follow-up can result in significant harm to patients, often requiring multiple trips to the operating room. Despite widespread use of electronic medical records, there are few standardized options for urologists to track ureteral stents and no data on the rate of retained stents in a pediatric population.

Objective: This pilot quality improvement project aims to: 1) develop a simple process to track indwelling ureteral stents using the Epic electronic medical record and 2) determine the incidence of forgotten stents in a pediatric population.

Expression of serum proteins in noise induced hearing loss workers of mining based industry.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is caused by excessive noise exposure due to occupational activities thus affects communication and quality of life. Prolonged occupational and environmental exposure to loud noise damages key molecules present in the micro-machinery of the ear which are required for the mechano-electrical transduction of sound waves in cochlea. Specific proteins are known to be associated with hearing loss and related structural and functional disabilities in the human inner, outer hair cells and cochlea.

Mesenchymal stem cells as living anti-inflammatory therapy for COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a pandemic disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), is growing at an exponential rate worldwide. Manifestations of this disease are heterogeneous; however, advanced cases often exhibit various acute respiratory distress syndrome-like symptoms, systemic inflammatory reactions, coagulopathy, and organ involvements. A common theme in advanced COVID-19 is unrestrained immune activation, classically referred to as a "cytokine storm", as well as deficiencies in immune regulatory mechanisms such as T regulatory cells.

Cushing syndrome cardiomyopathy: an unusual manifestation of small-cell lung cancer.

Cushing syndrome is a rare cause of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Cases describing this association are scarce. We describe a patient presenting with acute heart failure, new cardiomyopathy, refractory hypokalaemia, severe hyperglycaemia, and uncontrolled hypertension who was found to have hypercortisolism secondary to an ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone-secreting primary lung neoplasm.

Combating Climate Change-induced Heat Stress: Assessing Cool Roofs and Its Impact on the Indoor Ambient Temperature of the Households in the Urban Slums of Ahmedabad.

Background: The rising global temperature and frequent heatwaves are the adverse effects of climate change. The causalities and ill impacts of the heat stress were higher among the slum dwellers because of the vulnerable household structures, which were made by heat-trapping materials like tin sheets, cement sheet (asbestos), plastic, and tarpaulin. The houses are not only dwellings but also a source of livelihood for many slum dwellers as they are involved in home-based work.

Isolated DHEAS production by an adrenal neoplasm: Clinical, biochemical and pathologic characteristics.

Androgen-secreting adrenal neoplasms have a low incidence, usually secrete multiple hormones, and may present with hirsutism, acne, and alopecia. We report an exceedingly rare case of a purely dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) secreting adrenal neoplasm found incidentally on cross sectional imaging. The clinical, biochemical, and pathologic findings of this neoplasm are described.

Analysis of cell-free circulating tumor DNA in 419 patients with glioblastoma and other primary brain tumors.

Genomically matched trials in primary brain tumors (PBTs) require recent tumor sequencing. We evaluated whether circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) could facilitate genomic interrogation in these patients. Data from 419 PBT patients tested clinically with a ctDNA NGS panel at a CLIA-certified laboratory were analyzed.

Cochlear Proteins Associated with Noise-induced Hearing Loss: An Update.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the major occupational disease that has influence on the quality of life of mining workers. Several reports suggest NIHL is attributed to noise exposure at workplace and approximately 16% of hearing loss is due to it. NIHL occurs as a result of exposure to high-level noise (>85 dB) in the workplace.

Development of Ahmedabad's Air Information and Response (AIR) Plan to Protect Public Health.

Indian cities struggle with some of the highest ambient air pollution levels in the world. While national efforts are building momentum towards concerted action to reduce air pollution, individual cities are taking action on this challenge to protect communities from the many health problems caused by this harmful environmental exposure. In 2017, the city of Ahmedabad launched a regional air pollution monitoring and risk communication project, the Air Information and Response (AIR) Plan.
