Objective: There is a lack of evidence to support a consensus on whether surgery or radiotherapy is optimal for elderly or very elderly patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We aimed to assess the impact of surgery or radiotherapy on survival in elderly (≥70 years) and very elderly (≥80 years) patients with early-stage NSCLC.

Methods: Patients aged ≥70 years diagnosed with early-stage NSCLC between January 1, 1975, and December 31, 2018, were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of stage IIIB non-small-cell (NSCLC) lung cancer patients and to construct a nomogram to effectively predict their overall survival (OS).

Methods: In total, 4323 patients with stage IIIB NSCLC diagnosed between 1975 and 2018 were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Multiple prognostic factors were combined to construct a nomogram for predicting OS of patients with stage IIIB NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the survival benefits of postoperative chemotherapy versus surgery alone in elderly patients (≥70 years) with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • Using data from the SEER database, the study compared overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) between two groups: those receiving chemotherapy and those undergoing only surgery.
  • Results indicate that postoperative chemotherapy improved survival rates for stage IB-II patients but decreased survival for stage IA patients, suggesting a nuanced benefit based on cancer stage and characteristics.

Ethylene oxide (EO) is a reactive epoxide. However, the association between EO exposure and the risk of developing asthma in humans is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between EO exposure and the risk of developing asthma in the general US population.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of endogenous, covalently closed, single-stranded RNA without 3'-poly(A) and 5'-cap structures. CircRNAs are characterized by universality, diversity, stability and conservation, and have been found to regulate mammalian transcription and be translated into proteins. In this review, we summarized the biogenesis, classification, expression, distribution, biological functions and regulation of circRNAs.

Intraoperative pleural lavage cytology is a diagnostic technique used to detect tumor cells and serve as a prognostic parameter for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. In the past several decades, many scholars have been dedicated to clarifying the relationships between positive intraoperative pleural lavage cytology results and postoperative survival as well as tumor recurrence and metastasis. However, the findings remained various due to the inhomogeneity of different research.

Invasive adenocarcinoma intraoperatively misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma in situ or minimally invasive adenocarcinoma is more likely to undergo potentially insufficient resection. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of frozen section. We retrospectively reviewed 1,111 lung adenocarcinomas from January to March 2016 to evaluate the diagnostic performance of frozen section.
