This study investigated torque production resulting from the combined application of wide-pulse neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), delivered over the posterior tibial nerve, and muscle lengthening at two distinct amplitudes. Wide-pulse NMES (pulse duration: 1 ms; stimulation intensity: 5-10% of maximal voluntary contraction) was delivered at both low- (20 Hz) and high- (100 Hz) stimulation frequencies, either alone (NMES condition) or combined with a muscle lengthening at two amplitudes (10 or 20° ankle joint rotation; NMES + LEN and NMES + LEN conditions, respectively). For each frequency, the torque-time integral (TTI) and the muscle activity following the cessation of stimulation trains (sustained EMG activity) were calculated.

Laser direct drive (LDD) inertial confinement fusion (ICF) involves irradiating a spherical target of thermonuclear fuel coated with an ablator, usually made of polystyrene. Laser energy absorption near the target surface leads to matter ablation, hydrodynamic shocks, and ultimately capsule implosion. Fibroblasts isolated from a skin biopsy of a healthy individual were infected with Sendai virus containing the Yamanaka factors to produce transgene-free human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). CRISPR/Cas9 was used to generate an isogenic cell line carrying an inactivation of ST3GAL3, a risk gene associated with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. This ST3GAL3 null mutant (ST3GAL3-/-) iPSC line, which displays the expression of pluripotency-associated markers, the ability to differentiate into cells of the three germ layers in vitro, and a normal karyotype, is a powerful tool to investigate the impact of deficient sialylation of glycoproteins in neural development and plasticity.

In SARS-CoV-2, at the S1/S2 furin cleavage site, a four amino acid insert (P-R-R-A) not found in closely related corona viruses, has been shown to facilitate entry into respiratory epithelial cells and promote virus transmission, infectivity and virulence. By cupric aerosol treatment, complexation of these four amino acids (-P-R-R-A-), at the spike (S) protein site will lead to a conformational change possibly impeding SARS-CoV-2 replication process in the respiratory track. Since these four amino acids yield strong and stable copper complexes, subsequent to a steric hindrance, this complexation will disturb the furin-like protease cleavage at the spike protein site as it has been recently shown in vitro with copper gluconate.

Laser imprinting possesses a potential danger for low-adiabat and high-convergence implosions in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Within certain direct-drive ICF schemes, a laser picket (prepulse) is used to condition the target to increase the interaction efficiency with the main pulse. In Creutzfeldt Jakob, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, copper metalloproteins such as prion, amyloid protein precursor and α-synuclein are able to protect against free radicals by reduction from cupric Cu to cupreous Cu. In these pathologies, a regional copper (Cu) brain decrease correlated with an iron, zinc or manganese (Mn) increase has previously been observed, leading to local neuronal death and abnormal deposition of these metalloproteins in β-sheet structures. In this study we demonstrate the protective effect of Cu metalloproteins against deleterious free-radical effects.

Background: The whole blood extraction for liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) of simultaneous quantification of cyclosporine A (Cys A), tacrolimus (Tacrs), sirolimus (Siros), and everolimus (Evers) is still performed manually in many laboratories.
