In Paralympic sport, athletes, coaches and administrators seek medal-winning outcomes. Research in the fields of biomechanics and motor control can support the quantification of performance measures and injury risk. The aim of this article is to review the state of existing research and identify gaps offering researchers and practitioners targeted paths for creating competitive advantages.

Addressing the high and wide-ranging air pollution levels requires ambient monitoring, but many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain scarcely monitored. To address these data gaps, recent studies have utilized low-cost sensors.

First, a review of the literature found that the throwing pole is a key equipment aid that is not well understood, in part due to limitations in testing design. New data from the 2020 Paralympic Games showed inconsistent trends for the use of the throwing pole among athletes, particularly in transitionary classes (F33-34 and F54-55).

Nepal is a resources-limited country that reported a significant impact of the pandemic on maternal health services. It is therefore important to understand better the perspective of health care professionals in this context.

Design: Observational study using contemporaneous data collected during recruitment and psychometric test scores.
Setting: Assessment centre of UK national Public Health recruitment for postgraduate Public Health training.
The current study explored coach and athlete reactions and challenges leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, with a specific focus on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Games' postponement. Nine Australian Paralympic coaches (n = 3) and athletes (n = 6) shared their experiences in semistructured interviews. The thematic analysis highlighted how participants experienced the emergence of the pandemic in different ways, but all were relieved when the late but eventual decision to postpone the Games was made.

Specialty training in Public Health in the UK recruits candidates with medical as well as non-medical backgrounds. At the request of the UK Faculty of Public Health and Health Education England, we sought to examine whether differential attainment may or may not be occurring in the multi-stage recruitment process.

Background: Nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC) have an incidence of 152,000 cases per year in the United Kingdom (UK), which continues to rise. Incomplete excision rates for NMSC are estimated to be around 10 percent and result in patients having a higher risk of recurrence or having to undergo further treatment.
Objective: The objective of our study was to determine whether the use of dermoscopy as an adjunct to clinical examination could improve the rates of incomplete excision in NMSC lesions.

While propulsion predictions have been developed for daily propulsion, these have not been extended for maximal effort in wheelchair sports. A two step-approach to predicting the effects of changing set-up in wheelchair rugby was developed, consisting of: (One) predicting propulsion kinematics during a 5 m sprint by adapting an existing linkage model; and (Two) applying partial least-squares regression to wheelchair set-up, propulsion kinematics, and performance.

Lifestyle Medicine is an emergent discipline which aims to tackle the increasing burden of non-communicable disease. Previous work has suggested that students value clinical teaching over traditional Public Health topics.

This short review explores the state of talent identification and development of athletes in Paralympic contexts. While talent identification typically occurs during adolescence, this practice is more complex and variable in Paralympic contexts compared to non-Paralympic contexts. For example, Paralympic athletes can have impairments that are congenital or acquired at any time across their lives.

As part of a comprehensive policy package on tobacco control, the implementation of the legislation has seen a marked reduction in tobacco consumption. Yet there remains uncertainty about the level of compliance with smoke-free public places.

In Nepal, like many other low-resource settings, medical oxygen availability was inadequate before the pandemic. The mid-2021 wave of COVID-19 transmission starkly exposed the supply-demand imbalance of medical oxygen across the country.

Registries face considerable challenges in terms of constrained budgets, staffing shortages, and keeping pace with the evolving national and international data standards that are essential to cancer registration. Advanced informatics methods are needed to increase automation, reduce manual efforts, and to help address some of these challenges.

In this study, 187 Australian and Canadian Paralympic sport athletes completed a survey. Participants were divided into the following four groups: impaired muscle power (n = 79); ataxia, athetosis, and hypertonia (n = 44); limb deficiencies (n = 42); and other physical impairments (n = 22).

Methods: In the California Teachers Study cohort (N = 88,481) we identified diagnoses of AMD up to December 31, 2012 by linkage to statewide hospital discharge records. Aspirin, ibuprofen, other NSAIDs, and acetaminophen use and comprehensive risk factor information were collected via self-administered questionnaires at baseline in 1995-1996 and a follow-up questionnaire in 2005-2006.
Background: Over recent years there have been several major terror attacks in cities across Europe. These attacks result in deaths, physical injuries, and pose long-term threats to mental health and wellbeing of large populations. Although psychologists have completed important work on mental health responses to disaster exposure including terrorist attacks, the mental health impacts of such attacks have been comparatively less examined in academic literature than the acute health response to physical injuries.
