Study of heavy metals in wild edible mushrooms under different pollution conditions by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

In this work we studied and compared the metal uptake in edible mushrooms (Lepiota procera, Boletus badius, Boletus edulis, Tricholoma equestry, Lactarius deliciosus, Cantarelus tubalformis and Cantarelus edulis), relative to sampling sites submitted to different pollution conditions: car traffic, soil pollution due to pesticides and fertilizers used in old vineyards, and incineration of hospital waste. Soil was also collected in some places, and its content was correlated to the corresponding one in some mushrooms species. All samples, without any chemical treatment, were analyzed by an X-ray fluorescence set-up.

Locally periodic Timoshenko rod: experiment and theory.

The flexural vibrations of a locally periodic rod, which consists of N unit cells, are discussed both from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Timoshenko's beam theory and the transfer matrix method are used to calculate the normal-mode frequencies and amplitudes. The theoretical values are then compared with the experimental ones, which are obtained using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT).

Microsomal UDP-glucuronyltransferase in rat liver: oxidative activation.

Activation of microsomal UDP-glucuronyltransferase (UDPGT) activity by treatment of hepatic microsomes with either detergents or Fe(3+)/ascorbate pro-oxidant system has been reported; however, definite mechanisms underlying these effects have not been clarified. In this work, we characterize Fe(3+)/ascorbate-induced activation of UDPGT activity prior to solubilization with Triton X-100 and after the oxidation process provoked the solubilization of the enzyme. We observed a time-dependent increase in UDPGT activity up to 20 min.

Captopril reverses the reduced vasodilator response to bradykinin in hypertensive pregnant rats.

1. Pregnancy in rats is characterized by a reduction in arterial pressure that is associated with a decreased response to vasoconstrictors. However, the responses to vasodilators in isolated vessels remain controversial and are not well established in hypertensive pregnant rats.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) control of the circulation is altered with aging in adult humans. Similar changes are observed in obesity, particularly abdominal obesity. To determine whether age-associated differences in ANS-circulatory function can be partially explained by increased body fatness, we examined ANS function and three expressions of adiposity (total body fat, abdominal body fat, and abdominal-to-peripheral body fat distribution; dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) in 43 healthy men: 27 young (25 +/- 1 yr) and 16 older (65 +/- 1).

Free autologous buccal mucosal graft transplantation to treat ocular complications after toxic epidermal necrolysis: case report.

Background: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) can lead to ocular surface scarring associated with pain, dry eye symptoms, and decreased visual acuity that often are difficult to treat.

History And Signs: A 34-year-old woman was referred to our department two-years after TEN induced by lamotrigin (lamictal(R)). She was complaining of severe visual acuity loss, pain, and dry eye symptoms.

To determine the relation between habitual endurance exercise status and the age-associated decline in maximal aerobic capacity [i.e., maximal O(2) consumption (Vo(2 max))] in men, we performed a well-controlled cross-sectional laboratory study on 153 healthy men aged 20-75 yr: 64 sedentary and 89 endurance trained.

In the developing Drosophila eye, cell fate determination and pattern formation are directed by cell-cell interactions mediated by signal transduction cascades. Mutations at the rugose locus (rg) result in a rough eye phenotype due to a disorganized retina and aberrant cone cell differentiation, which leads to reduction or complete loss of cone cells. The cone cell phenotype is sensitive to the level of rugose gene function.

Interstitial dendritic cells of the heart harbor Trypanosoma cruzi antigens in experimentally infected dogs: importance for the pathogenesis of chagasic myocarditis.

Heart sections from 16 mongrel dogs, two normal controls and 14 infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, were submitted to immunohistochemical staining with either rabbit anti-cow S100 Protein monoclonal antibody or rabbit anti-T. cruzi purified specific antibody, using the peroxidase technique to investigate the participation of the interstitial dendritic cells of the heart (IDCs) in myocarditis of Chagas disease. Trypanosoma cruzi antigens were revealed as granular and dense deposits in IDC membrane in the heart of infected dogs both during acute and chronic myocarditis, but not in normal controls.

The impact of multidrug therapy on the epidemiological pattern of leprosy in Juiz de Fora, Brazil.

We investigated the impact of multidrug therapy (MDT) on the epidemiological pattern of leprosy in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, from 1978 to 1995. Evaluation of 1,283 medical charts was performed according to the treatment regimen used in two different periods. Following the introduction of MDT in 1987, prevalence of leprosy decreased from 22 patients/10,000 inhabitants to 5.

Neuronal development in the Drosophila compound eye: photoreceptor cells R1, R6, and R7 fail to differentiate in the retina aberrant in pattern (rap) mutant.

The compound eye of Drosophila is a reiterated pattern of 800 unit eyes known as ommatidia. In each ommatidium there are eight photoreceptor neurons (R1-R8) and an invariant number of accessory cells organized in a precise manner. In the developing eye, specification of cell fates is triggered by sequential inductive events mediated by cell-cell interactions.

Comparative efficacy of three different diethylcarbamazine regimens in lymphatic filariasis.

To assess the efficacy of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in clearing Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae (mf) from the circulation, we conducted a single blind hospital-based therapeutic trial of 3 DEC regimens. All patients were assessed by filtration of 1 mL of venous blood taken before and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after DEC administration. The efficacy of a 12 d course of 6 mg/kg DEC once daily was identical to that of a similar course with 2 mg/kg given 3 times daily, indicating that split-dose treatment does not improve mf clearance over single daily drug administration.

[Effect of inhaled terbutaline sulphate (dry powder, Turbuhaler and nebulizer solution) in children with acute asthma].

Forty seven children (6-14 years), with an acute mild or moderate attack of asthma (clinical score 3 or FEV1 > 50% of the predicted), were treated with terbutaline sulphate, by inhalation route with a dry powder inhaler (Turbuhaler - 0,5 mg - group T; N=27, or by a nebulizer 1% solution-in saline-compressed air (6 l/min.) group S; N=20. The children were evaluated at 5, 15, 25 and 30 minutes after the initial treatment.

Carnitine supplementation in diphtheria.

We studied the effect of carnitine supplementation in patients with diphtheria. Six hundred and twenty five children of diphtheria received either DL-carnitine (100 mg/kg/day in two divided doses orally for four days), or no carnitine, in addition to the routine treatment for diphtheria. The patients receiving carnitine (n = 327) and controls (n = 298) were matched for age, sex, duration of symptoms, grade of toxemia and immunization status.

Reversibility of cardiac fibrosis in mice chronically infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, under specific chemotherapy.

Unlabelled: This investigation was performed to verify the effect of specific chemotherapy (Benznidazole or MK-436) on the inflammatory and fibrotic cardiac alterations in mice chronically infected with the strains 21 SF (Type II) and Colombian (Type III) of Trypanosoma cruzi. To obtain chronically infected mice, two groups of 100 Swiss mice each, were infected with either the 21 SF or the Colombian strain (2 x 10(4) and 5 x 10(4) blood forms respectively). The rate of mortality in the acute phase was of 80% for both groups.

Experimental chemotherapy of Trypanosoma cruzi infection: persistence of parasite antigens and positive serology in parasitologically cured mice.
