This paper reports a plasma reactive oxygen species (ROS) method for decontamination of PPE (N95 respirators and gowns) using a surface DBD source to meet the increased need of PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A system is presented consisting of a mobile trailer (35 m3) along with several Dielectric barrier discharge sources installed for generating a plasma ROS level to achieve viral decontamination. The plasma ROS treated respirators were evaluated at the CDC NPPTL, and additional PPE specimens and material functionality testing were performed at Texas A&M.

During cell devision, maintaining the epigenetic information encoded in histone modification patterns is crucial for survival and identity of cells. The faithful inheritance of the histone marks from the parental to the daughter strands is a puzzle, given that each strand gets only half of the parental nucleosomes. Using a series of time- and temperature-resolved synchrotron diffraction experiments, the relationship between multiple polymorphs of ZnCl and its respective hydrates is established. The δ-phase is found to be the pure anhydrous phase, while the α, β, and γ phases result from partial hydration. Diffraction, gravimetric, and calorimetric measurements across the entire ZnCl· HO, 0 > > ∞ composition range using ultrapure, doubly sublimed ZnCl establish the ZnCl : HO phase diagram.

Under excess illumination, photosystem II of plants dissipates excess energy through the quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence in the light harvesting antenna. Various models involving chlorophyll quenching by carotenoids have been proposed, including (i) direct energy transfer from chlorophyll to the low-lying optically forbidden carotenoid S state, (ii) formation of a collective quenched chlorophyll-carotenoid S excitonic state, (iii) chlorophyll-carotenoid charge separation and recombination, and (iv) chlorophyll-chlorophyll charge separation and recombination. In previous work, the first three processes were mimicked in model systems: in a Zn-phthalocyanine-carotenoid dyad with an amide linker, direct energy transfer was observed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, whereas in a Zn-phthalocyanine-carotenoid dyad with an amine linker excitonic quenching was demonstrated.

A comprehensive and validated questionnaire modified from previous epidemics [1,2] was distributed to frontline HCWs at high risk for COVID-19 at our community-based teaching hospital, the epicenter of the pandemic in our state. Results of the full analysis were previously reported [3] indicating that our nursing staff were more likely to report feelings of stress, emotional exhaustion and fatigue compared to physicians and other health professionals. Exacerbating these concerns is the fact that microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) display different properties from their corresponding bulk materials; thus, not much is understood about their full biological and ecological implications. We present a novel small molecule antiviral chemotype that was identified by an unconventional cell-free protein synthesis and assembly-based phenotypic screen for modulation of viral capsid assembly. Activity of PAV-431, a representative compound from the series, has been validated against infectious virus in multiple cell culture models for all six families of viruses causing most respiratory disease in humans. In animals this chemotype has been demonstrated efficacious for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (a coronavirus) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (a paramyxovirus).
