Objectives: To assess the incidence and clinical findings associated with the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of dogs diagnosed with extrahepatic portosystemic shunts or intrahepatic portosystemic shunts in 15 referral hospitals between 2010 and 2023. Data including signalment, clinical signs, physical examination findings and clinicopathologic test results at the time of the diagnosis were collected, and the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis was recorded.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the fracture strength of two different Ribbond Fiber (Ribbond, Ribbond Inc., Seattle, WA, USA) restoration strategies in 5 mm deep standardized MOD cavities without interaxial dentin.

Material And Methods: 34 extracted human molars were randomly divided into two groups and restored as follows: Group 1 restoration with Ribbond Fiber placed at the cavity floor incorporated in Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow Universal composite (Tokuyama Dental Corporation Inc.

In this brief report we followed the evolution of the COVID-19 Infodemic Risk Index during 2020 and clarified its connection with the epidemic waves, focusing specifically on their co-evolution in Europe, South America, and South-eastern Asia. Using 640 million tweets collected by the Infodemic Observatory and the open access dataset published by Our World in Data regarding COVID-19 worldwide reported cases, we analyze the COVID-19 infodemic vs. pandemic co-evolution from January 2020 to December 2020.

The live streaming platform Twitch underwent in recent years an impressive growth in terms of viewership and content diversity. The platform has been the object of several studies showcasing how streamers monetize their content via a peculiar system centered around para-sociality and community dynamics. Nonetheless, due to scarcity of data, lots is still unknown about the platform-wide relevance of this explanation as well as its effect on inequalities across streamers.

Since the 11 of March 2020 when the World Health Organization declared the novel COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic, it registered officially over 5 million deaths worldwide. According to the course of the pandemic, governments encouraged best practices and then ruled out temporary restrictions on daily lives. In this scenario, non-essential labor-intensive sectors were forced to put on hold operations producing massive temporary layoffs.

The development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in health care contexts is a concurrent research and management question. Especially for hospitals, the expectations regarding improved efficiency and effectiveness by the introduction of novel AI applications are huge. However, experiences with real-life AI use cases are still scarce.

During extracorporeal circulation (ECC), blood is periodically sampled and analyzed to maintain the blood-gas status of the patient within acceptable limits. This protocol has well-known drawbacks that may be overcome by continuous monitoring. We present the characterization of a new pH sensor for continuous monitoring in ECC.

The design, development and performance evaluation of a fluorescence-based pH sensor for on-line measurements is presented. The pKa of the sensing element has been calculated to be 7.9, thus the sensor is suitable for measurement of near neutral solutions.

The fabrication and characterization of a disposable optical fiber sensor for the detection of pH in the range 5-8 are described. The sensing element is a drop of sol-gel hybrid material containing phenol red and deposited onto the tip of a large core plastic optical fiber. This fiber is also exploited for the optical interrogation.

The generation of ordered porous polymer structures by the breath figures (BFs) method has long been described as a complex phenomenon, in which several parameters combine in a fairly unknown way. The type of polymer and solvent, degree of humidity, and additives are just a few examples of the several parameters that have been described as playing a role in the generation of BFs. This work reports a detailed investigation over the role played by the solvent in the process of BFs generation from polystyrene (PS) solutions spread over different substrates, and discusses the geometrical aspects of the pores via a quantitative point of view by using a purposely developed software for image analysis.

Different organic/inorganic compositions and deposition methods were used to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces using metal alkoxides and the sol-gel process. Both surface roughness and composition had to be adjusted in order to obtain very high contact angles and low contact angle hysteresis as a necessary requirement for superhydrophobicity. Multilayer samples with a fluorinated organic-inorganic top layer showed water contact angles of about 157 degrees with low hysteresis (2 degrees ).

In this study, Enterocin 416K1, a bacteriocin produced by Enterococcus casseliflavus IM 416K1, was entrapped in an organic-inorganic hybrid coating applied to a LDPE (low-density polyethylene) film for its potential use in the active food packaging field. The antibacterial activity of the coated film was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes NCTC 10888 by qualitative modified agar diffusion assay, quantitative determination in listeria saline solution suspension and direct contact with artificially contaminated food samples (frankfurters and fresh cheeses) stored at room and refrigeration temperatures. All investigations demonstrated that enterocin-activated coatings have a good anti-listeria activity.

This paper demonstrates that the addition of fluorinated block copolymers to PET solutions can be used to prepare PET films with controlled surface morphology, porosity and chemical composition, by exploiting the phenomenon known as breath figures (BF) formation during a spin-coating procedure. Surface features, such as number, depth and diameter of pores and chemical composition, can be tuned by varying the experimental conditions: relative humidity, solution composition and amount of the fluorinated block copolymer added to the PET solutions (in the range of 0.5-10 wt% with respect to PET).
