Introduction: The incidence of thyroid carcinoma has grown significantly over the last few decades. A possible explanation is the increased diagnosis of small thyroid microcarcinoma (TMc). TMc reach a maximum diameter of ≤1 cm, identified during histopathology examination following a thyroidectomy performed for reasons not pertaining to malignancy.

The identification of enteropathogens is critical for the clinical management of patients with suspected gastrointestinal infection. The FLOW multiplex PCR system (FMPS) is a semi-automated platform (FLOW System, Roche) for multiplex real-time PCR analysis. FMPS has greater sensitivity for the detection of enteric pathogens than standard methods such as culture, biochemical identification, immunochromatography or microscopic examination.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on analyzing antimicrobial resistance in enteroaggregative (EAEC) and enterotoxigenic (ETEC) strains responsible for traveler's diarrhea (TD), particularly targeting resistance to specific antibiotics.
  • Results showed a significant rise in quinolone resistance among these strains, especially in individuals traveling to India and sub-Saharan Africa, with certain resistance genes being commonly found.
  • The findings suggest that fluoroquinolones are no longer suitable first-line treatments for TD in these regions, while azithromycin and rifaximin remain effective alternatives.

Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare disease associated with congenital or acquired genetic abnormalities that result in uncontrolled complement activation, leading to thrombotic microangiopathy and kidney failure. Until recently, the only treatment was plasma exchange or plasma infusion (PE/PI), but 60% of patients died or had permanent kidney damage despite treatment. Eculizumab, a complement inhibitor, has shown promising results in aHUS.

Introduction: Diarrhea is a frequent complication in hematologic patients, being an infectious cause frequently suspected. Rapid and accurate detection of gastrointestinal pathogens is vital in immunocompromised hosts. The aim of this study was to compare routine diagnostic methods versus a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea in immunocompromised hematologic patients.

Background In the case of psoriatic patients, only a limited number of studies have related serum biological therapies and antidrug antibodies levels to clinical response. With respect to etanercept, the available evidence has not shown any relationship yet. Objective The aim of this study was to determine if there is any correlation among etanercept serum levels, the presence of anti-etanercept antibodies and clinical response to this treatment in psoriatic patients.

Travelers' diarrhea is a major public health problem. From patients in whom diarrhea developed after travel to India, 5 enteroaggregative Escherichia coli strains carrying β-lactamase CTX-M-15 were identified; 3 belonged to clonal complex sequence type 38. This β-lactamase contributes to the multidrug resistance of enteroaggregative E.

A carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strain (DVR22) was recovered from a stool specimen from a patient with traveler's diarrhea who had traveled to India. Molecular screening led to the first identification of NDM-1 in Spain. The bla(NDM-1) gene was located in a conjugative plasmid of ca.

Objective: To assess the value of reaspiration cytology in benign nodular thyroid disease.

Design: We prospectively studied 400 patients (365 women, 35 men) aged 46 years (18-89) with nodular thyroid disease and initial benign fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Reaspiration of the same nodule was performed in a median follow-up time of 14 months (6-18).
