Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the levels of knowledge, awareness, and behavior change regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) among women aged 25-55, highlighting an increase in risk factors in this demographic despite low awareness.
  • Using an online survey of 149 predominantly minority women, the research examines how perceptions of CVD susceptibility and severity affect intentions to change health behavior.
  • Findings suggest that women who feel at risk for CVD but do not view it as severe are more likely to want to change their behavior, indicating that improving perceptions may be key to reducing risk factors.

Due to improvements in recognition and management of their multisystem disease, the long-term survival of infants, children, and adolescents with trisomy 21 and congenital heart disease now matches children with congenital heart disease and no genetic condition in many scenarios. Although this improved survival is a triumph, individuals with trisomy 21 and congenital heart disease have unique and complex care needs in the domains of physical, developmental, and psychosocial health, which affect functional status and quality of life. Pulmonary hypertension and single ventricle heart disease are 2 known cardiovascular conditions that reduce life expectancy in individuals with trisomy 21.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the construct validity of the NEPSY-II assessment tool, focusing on 23 subtests scores from children aged 7-12, using advanced statistical methods like confirmatory factor analysis.
  • - Results showed the NEPSY-II subtests are multidimensional, with a strong general factor and four first-order factors representing various neuropsychological domains, but subtest scores should be interpreted carefully due to lower loadings.
  • - The findings emphasize that interpretations of NEPSY-II results should prioritize individual subtests over composite scores, suggesting caution in how these assessments are used in practice.

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately 1.4 million adults in the U.S. live with congenital heart disease (CHD), and as they enter college, their health care needs must be prioritized by health care providers at college health centers.
  • A study involving interviews with providers from five college health centers revealed that while many felt capable of handling preventive care for students with CHD, they struggled with urgent care situations and lacked formalized processes for managing these students' health needs.
  • The findings emphasize the necessity for improved collaboration between college health centers and specialists to better address the comprehensive health care requirements of students with chronic conditions like CHD, with nurse practitioners playing a crucial role in facilitating this transition.

The doping of wide band-gap semiconducting ZnSe by transition metal (TM) atoms finds applications from mid-infrared lasing, sensing, photoelectrochemical cells, to nonlinear optics. Yet understanding the response of these materials at the atomic and electronic level is lacking, particularly in comparing a range of TM dopants, which were studied primarily by phenomenological crystal-field theory. In this work, to investigate bulk ZnSe singly doped with first-row TM atoms, specifically Ti through Cu, we applied a first-principles approach and crystal-field theory to explain the origin of the infrared absorption.
