Article Synopsis
  • Vibrio harveyi causes serious diseases in shrimp that lead to high mortality rates, and antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in treating such infections.
  • The newly characterized bacteriophage, VPMCC14, effectively infects and lyses Vibrio harveyi strains, showing promising stability across various environmental conditions and significant virulence even at low concentrations.
  • With a genome size of 134,472 bp and unique genetic features, VPMCC14 is proposed as a potential biocontrol agent for managing V. harveyi infections in aquaculture settings.

The main objective of this study was to obtain chitin in pure form from a new crustacean waste material for industrial applications. Black tiger shrimp shell wastes are a rich source of protein and valuable bioactive carbohydrate polymers such as chitin. After removal of carotenoid, Black tiger shrimp shell wastes (BTSHWs) were treated with chemicals and protease enzyme to extract chitin.
