Pain is a multifactorial debilitating condition associated with some psychiatric comorbidities such as generalized anxiety and depression. Concerning pharmacological treatment, which is often inefficient or associated with intense side effects, the physical and social context may be fundamental for patient's health improvement. In this sense, we sought to assess the impact of an enriched environment (EE) on neuropathic pain (NP) and depression comorbid.

Background And Purpose: Chronic neuropathic pain (NP) is commonly associated with cognitive and emotional impairments. Cannabidiol (CBD) presents a broad spectrum of action with a potential analgesic effect. This work investigates the CBD effect on comorbidity between chronic NP, depression, and memory impairment.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) disinhibition in medial hypothalamus (MH) nuclei of rats elicits some defensive reactions that are considered panic attack-like behaviours. Recent evidence showed that the norepinephrine-mediated system modulates fear-related defensive behaviours organised by MH neurons at least in part via noradrenergic receptors recruitment on midbrain tegmentum. However, it is unknown whether noradrenergic receptors of the MH also modulate the panic attack-like reactions.

Rationale: Several lines of evidence have demonstrated that the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB) is found in the caudate nucleus and putamen (CPu) in addition to the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr). Here, we investigated the role of endocannabinoid neuromodulation of striato-nigral disinhibitory projections on the activity of nigro-collicular GABAergic pathways that control the expression of unconditioned fear-related behavioural responses elicited by microinjections of the GABA receptor selective antagonist bicuculline (BIC) in the deep layers of the superior colliculus (dlSC).

Methods: Fluorescent neural tract tracers were deposited in either CPu or in SNpr.

Cytotoxic agents synergize with immune checkpoint inhibitors and improve outcomes for patients with several cancer types. Nonetheless, a parallel increase in the incidence of dose-limiting side effects, such as peripheral neuropathy, is often observed. Here, we investigated the role of the programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) axis in the modulation of paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain.

Cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CBR) is widely distributed in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr). However, the role of CBR at the SNpr level in threatening situations is poorly understood. We investigated the role of CBR in the SNpr on the expression of fear responses in mice confronted with urutu-cruzeiro pit vipers.

Background: There is a wide range of animal models available today for studying chronic pain associated with a variety of etiologies and an extensive list of clinical manifestations of peripheral neuropathies. Photobiomodulation is a new tool for the treatment of pain in a convenient, noninvasive way.

Objective: The aim of this work is to elucidate the effects of infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on behavioral responses to nociceptive stimuli in chronic pain models.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a therapy suggested for the treatment of pain and inflammation. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain the analgesic and inflammatory effects of photobiomodulation, but there are still gaps on the mechanisms underlying. The objective was to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect of red LED, as well as to investigate the possible mechanism of action in acute nociception models.

Follicular cystic ovary disease is a common reproductive disorder in women and females of domestic animals, characterized by anovulation and the persistence of follicle is a common cause of reproductive failure in mammalian. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by hyperandrogenism (HA), chronic anovulation and polycystic ovaries, and it is a common reproductive endocrine disease with clinical manifestations including hirsutism, acne, infertility and obesity that can affect 5-20% of women in their reproductive age. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has been investigated and used in clinical practice, related to biomodulatory influences on cellular functions in animals and humans, both in vivo and in vitro.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The genus Hyptis comprehends almost 400 species widespread in tropical and temperate regions of America. The use of Hyptis spicigera Lam. (Lamiaceae) is reported in traditional medicine due to its gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Low-intensity phototherapy using light fonts, like light-emitting diode (LED), in the red to infrared spectrum is a promising alternative for the treatment of pain. However, the underlying mechanisms by which LED phototherapy reduces acute pain are not yet well understood. This study investigated the analgesic effect of multisource LED phototherapy on the acute nocifensive behavior of mice induced by thermal and chemical noxious stimuli.

Tyrosinase activity of mushroom extracts was checked for their ability to degrade phenol. Phenol oxidation kinetics was investigated varying temperature from 10 to 60 °C and the initial values of pH, enzyme activity and phenol concentration in the ranges 4.5-8.

Transition to diets that are high in saturated fat and sugar has caused a global public health concern, as the pattern of food consumption is a major modifiable risk factor for chronic non-communicable diseases. Although agri-food systems are intimately associated with this transition, agriculture and health sectors are largely disconnected in their priorities, policy, and analysis, with neither side considering the complex inter-relation between agri-trade, patterns of food consumption, health, and development. We show the importance of connection of these perspectives through estimation of the eff ect of adopting a healthy diet on population health, agricultural production, trade, the economy, and livelihoods, with a computable general equilibrium approach.

Drug-induced sensitization has been associated with enhanced self-administration and may contribute to addiction. The possible association between sensitization and voluntary ethanol consumption using an addiction model was investigated. Mice (n = 60) were individually housed with ad libitum access to food and had free choice between ethanol (5% and 10%) and water in a four-phase paradigm: free choice (12 weeks), withdrawal (2 weeks), re-exposure (2 weeks), and quinine-adulteration (2 weeks).

The aim of the present study was validating pharmacologically a mouse model of alcohol addiction. Mice (n = 60) were offered ethanol (5% and 10%) and water in a free choice paradigm consisting of four phases: free choice (10 weeks), withdrawal (2 weeks), re-exposure (2 weeks) and quinine- adulteration (2 weeks). Control mice (n = 10) had access to water.

The serotonergic system is involved in depression, anxiety and alcoholism. The rewarding properties of ethanol, mainly its anxiolytic and stimulant effects, as well as the development of dependence on ethanol have been related to the serotonergic system. Consequently, the use of selective serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) has been proposed in the treatment of alcoholism.
