  • A three-step scale called DICA was evaluated for its ability to predict diverticular disease in patients without symptoms during colorectal cancer screening.
  • In a study involving 3,879 participants, 24.7% were found to have diverticula, but the DICA scale did not show any significant relationship with the occurrence of diverticulitis or hospital admissions.
  • The study concluded that DICA has limited predictive value for diverticulitis, highlighting the need for further research with larger groups.

Photocyclization of 8-aryloxy-3-phenylbenzo[][1,2,4]triazines leads to π-delocalized helicene radicals 1[n] ( = 5, 6, 7) containing the ring-fused 1,4-dihydro[1,2,4]triazin-4-yl as a spin source. Single crystal XRD revealed that the photocyclization to 1[n] involves a Smiles rearrangement. Radicals 1[n] were investigated by spectroscopic, electrochemical and DFT methods, while racemic helicene 1[7] was resolved and ECD spectra were recorded.

Background: The Mendelian Disorders of Cornification (MeDOC) comprise a large number of disorders that present with either localised (palmoplantar keratoderma, PPK) or generalised (ichthyoses) signs. The MeDOC are highly heterogenic in terms of genetics and phenotype. Consequently, diagnostic process is challenging and before implementation of the next generation sequencing, was mostly symptomatic, not causal, which limited research on those diseases.

Clathrate hydrates are among the most intensively studied H-bond inclusion compounds. Despite the broad definition for this class of compounds, their meaning commonly refers to closed polyhedral nanocages that encapsulate small guest molecules. On the other hand, larger solutes enforce another type of encapsulation because of the solute size effect.

In recent years, much has been written about the possibilities of using exogenous sodium butyrate in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, in prehabilitation, in peri- and postoperative treatment, as well as its local application. It became possible thanks to the development of a special formulation (microencapsulation technique) enabling the delivery of unstable butyrate compounds to the large intestine, where it is used primarily as a source of energy. It also plays a key role in maintaining body homeostasis by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and stimulating the intestinal immune system.

μ-opioid receptor ligands such as morphine and fentanyl are the most known and potent painkillers. However, the severe side effects seen with their use significantly limit their widespread use. The continuous broadening of knowledge about the properties of the interactions of the MOP receptor (human mu opioid receptor, OP3) with ligands and specific intracellular signaling pathways allows for the designation of new directions of research with respect to compounds with analgesic effects in a mechanism different from classical ligands.

Article Synopsis
  • The study attempted to prepare N-annulated planar Blatter radicals using aza-Pschorr and photocyclization methods, but primarily produced a zwitterionic heterocycle instead.
  • In one method, a novel carbazole derivative was also generated, hinting at the potential formation of the elusive Blatter radical that breaks down easily due to N-R bond homolysis.
  • DFT computational analyses indicate that -Ar derivatives of these planar radicals could be stable enough for isolation and allow for comparison of electronic structures with those containing O, S, and N-Ph groups.

Two derivatives of a "super stable" Blatter radical (1,3-diphenyl-7-trifluoromethyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl) with N(1)-Ar = 2-CFCH and 2-MeOCH were obtained and investigated using XRD and SQUID magnetometry methods. The investigation revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions in both radicals, which are described using the Hatfield model. For the latter radical, an abrupt and reversible change in the () plot was observed at 29 K.

Impairment in autonomic self-regulatory functioning reflected by reduced heart rate variability (HRV) is a common feature of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and is believed to heighten AUD relapse risk. However, to date, no study has explored associations between in natura HRV and subsequent alcohol use among individuals seeking AUD recovery. In this study, 42 adults in the first year of a current AUD recovery attempt were monitored for 4 days using ambulatory electrocardiogram, followed by 90 days of alcohol use monitoring using timeline follow-back.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a biomarker of psychological and physiological health with greater variability reflecting greater psychophysiological regulatory capacity. The damaging effects of chronic, heavy alcohol use on HRV have been well explored, with greater alcohol use associated with lower resting HRV. In this study we sought to replicate and extend our previous finding that HRV improves as individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) reduce or stop drinking and engage in treatment.
