Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is one of the most dangerous air pollutants of anthropogenic origin; it consists of a heterogeneous mixture of inorganic and organic components, including transition metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Although previous studies have focused on the effects of exposure to highly concentrated PM on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, emerging evidence supports a significant impact of air pollution on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by linking exposure to external stressors with conditions such as appendicitis, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. In general, it has been hypothesized that the main mechanism involved in PM toxicity consists of an inflammatory response and this has also been suggested for the GI tract.

This study describes the chemical and toxicological characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM) in the Po Valley, one of the largest and most polluted areas in Europe. A solid phase extraction procedure (SPE) is described for the quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric particulate matter (PM), as ubiquitous environmental pollutants routinely measured in air quality monitoring. A SPE cartridge was used based on a molecular imprinted polymer (MIP-SPE) properly tailored for selective retention of PAHs with 4 and more benzene fused rings. This paper describes the in situ monitoring of indoor air quality (IAQ) in two dwellings, using low-cost IAQ sensors to provide high-density temporal and spatial data. IAQ measurements were conducted over 2-week periods in the kitchen and bedroom of each home during the winter, spring, and summer seasons, characterized by different outside parameters, that were simultaneously measured. The mean indoor PM concentrations were about 15 μg m in winter, they dropped to values close to 10 μg m in spring and increased to levels of about 13 μg m in summer.

Objective: Some of the manifestations of mixed cryoglobulinemia syndrome (MCS) can be severe or life-threatening, and should be rapidly contained but, as the therapeutic approaches to such conditions are largely based on anecdotal data, a consensus conference was organised by the Italian Group for the Study of Cryoglobulinemia (GISC) with the aim of providing a set of recommendations based on an in-depth survey of the available data and expert opinion.

Methods: The consensus panel, which included specialists working in different medical fields involved in the management of MCS patients, was first asked to divide the manifestations of MCS into severe or life-threatening conditions on the basis of their own experience, after which a complete literature review was carried out in accordance with the Cochrane guidelines for systematic reviews.

Results: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) was considered the elective first-line treatment in the case of life-threatening manifestations of MCS (LT-MCS) and patients with severe clinical symptoms (S-MCS) who fail to respond to (or who are ineligible for) other treatments.
