The cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis was subjected to a fractionation process involving ultrasound-assisted extraction and membrane filtration to obtain a pure phycocyanin fraction and a clarified colorless protein fraction free of chlorophyll and carotenoids. The effects of pressure and power on total protein release were assessed. The retention of the extracted proteins was then assessed by ultrafiltration, with and without ammonium sulfate precipitation.

The aim of this study was to produce binderless materials by thermocompression from lignocellulosic biomass pretreated using twin-screw extrusion. The impact of twin-screw extrusion pretreatment on sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was evaluated, along with the effects of two associated parameters: the liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio and the screw profile, using three different mechanical shear rates. It was shown that twin-screw extrusion pretreatment resulted in materials with improved properties as compared to those obtained with untreated SCB.

Five parameters were investigated: pressure applied (7-102 MPa), molding temperature (60-240 °C), molding time (5-30 min), fiber/fine-particle ratio (0/100-100/0) and moisture content (0-20%). Stirred bead milling proved to be an efficient cell destruction technique in a biorefinery unit for the extraction of over 95 % of proteins and 60 % of carbohydrates from the green marine microalga Tetraselmis suecica. Fractionation of lignocellulose is a fundamental step in the valorization of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin to produce various sustainable fuels and chemicals. Mineral acid fractionation is one of the most applied process and leads to the solubilization and hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses, whereas most of the lignin remains insoluble and can be separated from the extract. A Doehlert experimental design was conducted and surface response methodology was used to determine the effect of temperature, contact time and solid liquid ratio on isoflavone extraction from soybean flour or Soybean Protein Isolate in pressurized water system. The optimal conditions conducted gave an extraction yield of 85% from soybean flour. For Soybean Protein Isolate compared to soybean flour, the isoflavone extraction yield is 61%.

Microscopic observation of sunflower meal before and after extraction indicated that extensive cellular disruption was achieved by extrusion, but that unextracted oil remained sequestered as coalesced oil within the void spaces of disrupted cotyledon cells. The aim of this article is to compare two different sets of optimal conditions for twin-screw extraction of xylans and define their influence on the purification steps, combining ultrafiltration and industrial chromatography. A twin-screw extruder was used for the extraction of wheat bran hemicelluloses by the co-extrusion of wheat straw and bran. As compared with a stirred reactor extraction, a twin-screw extruder resulted in a lower extraction rate (only about 24% of hemicelluloses in the wheat bran), but it has the advantages of a shorter residence time for the vegetable matter and a lower chemical and water consumption. Hemicellulose powder production is usually effected via an expensive alcoholic precipitation step after concentration.
