Article Synopsis
  • Chronic silica exposure can lead to autoimmune diseases (AID) and silicosis, with immune mechanisms still not fully understood, especially in early cases without silicosis.
  • A study analyzed the effects of crystalline silica on T cell types and regulatory T cells (Tregs) among non-silicotic workers exposed to silica, comparing them to healthy controls.
  • The findings revealed lower Tregs and higher T cell activation in silica-exposed workers, with significant associations between these immune changes and the duration of silica exposure, along with a notable increase in autoantibodies, particularly in those exposed for over 10 years.
