Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the occurrence of trace metals in Spongia officinalis within the rocky communities of the Mediterranean, focusing on nine sites in the Marseille area.
  • Long-term measurements reveal a significant decrease in heavy metal concentrations between 1984 and 1999, indicating improved seawater quality due to the operation of a sewage treatment plant.
  • Metals such as Fe, Pb, and Cr effectively illustrate a pollution gradient, while Cd levels remained stable, highlighting spatial contamination patterns.
