[Bilateral facial palsy: an atypical presentation of Lyme disease (a case report)].

Lyme neuroborreliosis is a rare zoonosis which can be difficult to diagnose, in particular in low endemic areas. We here report the case of a 35-year-old man presenting with disabling back pain preceded by facial monoplegia, which was wrongly treated as Bell's palsy (paralysis a frigore) and then as post-traumatic lumbosciatica. The onset of facial diplegia allowed for a definitive diagnosis.

Perceived Hospital Preparedness Is Negatively Associated With Pandemic-Induced Psychological Vulnerability in Primary Care Employees: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound negative impact on the psychological wellbeing of healthcare providers (HPs), but little is known about the factors that positively predict mental health of primary care staff during these dire situations.

Methods: We conducted an online questionnaire survey among 702 emergency department workers across 10 hospitals in Switzerland and Belgium following the first COVID-19 wave in 2020, to explore their psychological vulnerability, perceived concerns, self-reported impact and level of pandemic workplace preparedness. Participants included physicians, nurses, psychologists and nondirect care employees (administrative staff).

Background: The optimal ventilation modalities to manage out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remain debated. Background: Blood gas analysis (BGA) is a frequent painful procedure in emergency departments. The primary objective of the study was a quantitative analysis to assess the mean difference and 95% confidence interval of the difference between capillary and arterial BGA for pH, pCO, and lactate. Secondary objective was to measure the sensitivity and specificity of capillary samples to detect altered pH, hypercarbia, and lactic acidosis.

Impact of treatment delays on outcome of acute testicular torsion: a 15-year retrospective study.

Introduction: Preservation of the testicle is directly associated with the duration of torsion. The aim in this retrospective study was to identify factors that influence pre-and in-hospital times and measure the extent to which these times affect testicle survival.

Background: The epidemiology and outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) varies across Europe. Following on from EuReCa ONE, the aim of this study was to further explore the incidence of and outcomes from OHCA in Europe and to improve understanding of the role of the bystander.

Methods: This prospective, multicentre study involved the collection of registry-based data over a three-month period (1st October 2017 to 31st December 2017).

Objective: Survival rate of cardiac arrest due to hanging (H-CA) victims is low. Hence, this leads to the question of the utility of resuscitation in these patients. The objective was to investigate whether there are predictive criteria for survival with a good neurological outcome or predictive criteria for non-survival or survival with a poor neurological outcome enabling us to define the termination of resuscitation rules in these patients.

Hypoxemia after pneumothorax exsufflation: a case report.

We describe a 36-year-old patient who was admitted to the emergency ward for acute dyspnea due to a spontaneous pneumothorax. He was successfully drained but shortly after presented a severe hypoxemia due to pulmonary oedema secondary to pulmonary re-expansion. The physiopathology behind this complication is still unknown.

Adherence to HIV post-exposure prophylaxis: A multivariate regression analysis of a 5 years prospective cohort.

Background: Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) is a recommended public health intervention after a sexual or percutaneous exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study recording consultations for nPEP at a reference HIV center in Brussels, Belgium from January 2011 to December 2015. We recorded attendance to follow-up, reported completion of nPEP and pharmacy records to measure adherence.

Cannabis body packing: a case report.

Drug traffic is a major concern worldwide. We report a case of a 27-year old male who presented with a diffuse abdominal plain to the emergency department. Abdominal X-ray demonstrated multiple foreign bodies along the intestinal tract, which were found to be cannabis packets.

[Legionnaires' disease complicated by rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure: about a case].

Legionnaires' disease is a bacterial disease of the respiratory system caused by a gram-negative germ whose clinical manifestation can be benign limiting to flu-like syndrome or can be more severe being characterized by pneumonia which may be complicated by multisystem disease that can lead to death. We report the case of a 48 year-old patient with rhabdomyolysis complicated by acute renal failure following Legionella pneumophila pneumonia. We here highlight the pathophysiological aspects and treatment of this rare complication during Legionella infection.

EuReCa ONE-27 Nations, ONE Europe, ONE Registry: A prospective one month analysis of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes in 27 countries in Europe.

Introduction: The aim of the EuReCa ONE study was to determine the incidence, process, and outcome for out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) throughout Europe.

Methods: This was an international, prospective, multi-centre one-month study. Patients who suffered an OHCA during October 2014 who were attended and/or treated by an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) were eligible for inclusion in the study.

Objectives: Emergency medical services play a key role in the recognition and treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This study evaluates the effect of emergency medical services use on adherence to reperfusion therapy guidelines in Belgian STEMI patients and on in-hospital mortality.

Methods: The mode of admission with against without emergency medical services was associated with baseline risk profile, reperfusion modalities and in-hospital mortality in 5692 consecutive STEMI patients from 2012 to 2014.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from a prospective nPEP (non-Occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis) registry based on patients consulting at one academic Emergency department located in Brussels, Belgium. We review here 1,357 cases consulting from January 2011 to December 2013.The objective of the study is to determine whether emergency physicians prescribe nPEP according to national guideline with support from IDS (infectious disease specialists).

Computer tomography imaging of an unusual cause of appendicitis: a case report.

Foreign body occlusion of appendices lumen is a quite rare cause of appendicitis due to foreign body. We present a case of a 63-year-old male who presented with right lower quadrant pain since 24 hours. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated an acute appendicitis due to a metallic foreign body which was found to be a bullet.
