Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has spread worldwide and is responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. Control strategies to limit the emergence and spread of this organism rely on rapid and sensitive tests for detection of MRSA carriage. The COBAS AMPLICOR CT/NG test is widely used for the diagnosis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection using genital swabs or urine samples. Although highly specific, cross-reactivity occurs with some nonpathogenic strains of Neisseria and Lactobacillus species. In low-prevalence populations, even highly specific assays may require confirmatory testing of positive results.

Blind protected bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) could be an interesting tool in the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia in intubated children, but its reproducibility has never been evaluated. This study evaluates the reproducibility, feasibility, and safety of blind protected BAL in mechanically ventilated children. Two blind protected BAL were done, at a 2-hour interval, in 30 patients.
