Renal proximal tubules are a primary site of injury in metabolic diseases. In obese patients and animal models, proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) display dysregulated lipid metabolism, organelle dysfunctions, and oxidative stress that contribute to interstitial inflammation, fibrosis and ultimately end-stage renal failure. Our research group previously pointed out AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) decline as a driver of obesity-induced renal disease.

Background: Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is a very rare autosomal inherited bleeding disease affecting megakaryocyte lineage with impacts on oral health such as gingival bleeding, which requires specific management protocols. Very few clinical cases have been published in the dental and hematologic literature.

Objectives: This study focuses on a series of 21 patients affected specifically by GT and their hemorrhagic prophylaxis management with the use of recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) for dental extractions and full-mouth debridement.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) plays a crucial role in the development of primary graft dysfunction (PGD) following lung transplantation. A promising novel approach to optimize donor organs before transplantation and reduce the incidence of PGD is mitochondrial transplantation.

Methods: In this study, we explored the delivery of isolated mitochondria in 4 hours ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) before transplantation as a means to mitigate IRI.

Introduction: Acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) is a rare haemorrhagic disorder. The prophylaxis and treatment of bleeding before surgery are complex. Since 2018, a new recombinant VWF (rVWF) concentrate that contains no factor VIII (FVIII) but a high amount of high molecular weight VWF multimers has been available in France.

Background: Lung transplantation is hindered by low donor lung utilization rates. Infectious complications are reasons to decline donor grafts due to fear of post-transplant primary graft dysfunction. Mesenchymal stem cells are a promising therapy currently investigated in treating lung injury.

In addition to having some of the worst health outcomes in the region, Haiti faces a political and economic crisis. The most recent humanitarian crisis includes an increase in homicides and kidnappings in the capital Port-au-Prince. This study is a cross-sectional, mixed methods online survey of health workers and medical students in Port-au-Prince from May 20 - September 15, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • * Twelve pigs were used to induce aspiration lung injury, and after assessing the lungs, they were divided into two groups: one with NET removal plus EVLP and another with only EVLP.
  • * Results showed that the lungs treated with NET removal had significantly improved function and morphology, indicating the removal of NETs during EVLP could lead to better outcomes in lung transplantation and increase the number of available donor lungs.

Article Synopsis
  • * Atypical HUS is driven by uncontrolled activation of the complement system, which can be triggered by various factors such as infections, malignancies, and genetic mutations.
  • * The case presented involves an adult with HUS leading to multiple organ failure and emphasizes the need to consider HUS in adult diagnoses of thrombotic microangiopathies.

Purpose: Healthcare organizations require more proactive behaviors from nursing professionals. However, nurse managers' proactivity has rarely been analyzed in the literature and little is known about the antecedents and consequences of their proactive behavior at work. This study examines the relationships between job characteristics (i.

In patients receiving vancomycin therapy, serum drug levels are routinely monitored to ensure therapeutic dosing and minimize toxicity. In rare cases, vancomycin levels may be falsely or persistently elevated without any apparent cause. In this case report, we explore a rare case of persistently elevated vancomycin levels despite discontinuation of the drug for days.

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) remains a challenge for lung transplantation (LTx) recipients as a leading cause of poor early outcomes. New methods are needed for more detailed monitoring and understanding of the pathophysiology of PGD. The measurement of particle flow rate (PFR) in exhaled breath is a novel tool to monitor and understand the disease at the proteomic level.

In this work, a colorimetric indicator based on gold nanoparticles (AuNP) and a biodegradable and eco-friendly polymer (sodium alginate, Alg.), was developed for the real-time detection of fish spoilage products. The AuNPs and the colorimetric indicator were characterized using UV-VIS, FTIR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC, XRD, TEM, and colorimetry.

Acute lung injury (ALI) represents an aetiologically diverse form of pulmonary damage. Part of the assessment and diagnosis of ALI depends on skilled observer-based scoring of brightfield microscopy tissue sections. Although this readout is sufficient to determine gross alterations in tissue structure, its categorical scores lack the sensitivity to describe more subtle changes in lung morphology.

Background: Lung transplantation (LTx) is the only treatment option for end-stage lung disease. Despite improvements, primary graft dysfunction (PGD) remains the leading cause of early mortality and precipitates chronic lung allograft dysfunction, the main factor in late mortality after LTx. PGD develops within the first 72 hours and impairs the oxygenation capacity of the lung, measured as partial pressure of oxygen (PaO)/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO).

Introduction: In recent years, the field of graft preservation has made considerable strides in improving outcomes related to solid organ restoration and regeneration. Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) in line with the related devices and treatments has yielded promising results within preclinical and clinical studies, with the potential to improve graft quality. Its main benefit is to render marginal and declined donor lungs suitable for transplantation, ultimately increasing the donor pool available for transplantation.

Background: Sex differences have been observed in the development of obesity-related complications in patients, as well as in animal models. Accumulating evidence suggests that sex-dependent regulation of lipid metabolism contributes to sex-specific physiopathology. Lipid accumulation in the renal tissue has been shown to play a major role in the pathogenesis of obesity-induced kidney injury.

We present a 22-day-old male born full term who presented with worsening non-projectile, non-bilious vomiting and failure to thrive (FTT) and was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for severe metabolic acidosis with an elevated anion gap. Despite changing the formula, the patient continued to have spit-ups after feeds since birth. Before this admission, his vomiting worsened with every feed, which was now forceful along with two days of loose stools.

Elevated levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been reported in primary graft dysfunction, making methods to reduce or remove them highly valuable. The mechanisms behind primary graft dysfunction (PGD) remain rudimentarily understood but its relation to higher rates of acute and chronic rejection necessitates the development of preventative treatments. This case series explores the use of a cytokine adsorber during lung transplantation with the focus of reducing circulating nucleosome levels as a measure of NETs.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 70-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of a swelling in his neck, which was initially treated with antibiotics but worsened rapidly upon admission.
  • - Diagnostic tests, including blood work, scans, and a biopsy, indicated a diagnosis of focal myositis with no other underlying conditions found.
  • - The case highlights the importance of thorough clinical examinations and a high level of suspicion for serious conditions when assessing cervical masses.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been studied for their potential benefits in treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and have reported mild effects when trialed within human clinical trials. MSCs have been investigated in preclinical models with efficacy when administered at the time of lung injury. Human integrin α10β1-selected adipose tissue-derived MSCs (integrin α10β1-MSCs) have shown immunomodulatory and regenerative effects in various disease models.
