Expectations and fears of patients with diabetes and macular edema treated by intravitreal injections.

Aims: Clinical outcomes of diabetic macular edema (DME) have been widely described, but data on diabetic retinopathy perceptions by diabetes patients are limited. The aim of this survey was to explore the lived experience, knowledge, fears and expectations about disease, and treatment in patients with diabetes and macular edema treated with intravitreal injections (IVTI) and to characterize patient profiles.

Methods: Cross-sectional survey including a preliminary qualitative phase (20 patients with DME, treated or treatment-naive, 5 female and 15 male, age 36-74 years) followed by a quantitative survey (116 patients treated with IVTI for DME).

Inject and extend dosing versus dosing as needed: a comparative retrospective study of ranibizumab in exudative age-related macular degeneration.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare two strategies for retreatment with ranibizumab in exudative age-related macular degeneration.

Method: Two series of consecutive patients treated with ranibizumab in a hospital-based department of ophthalmology were analyzed retrospectively: the first series (n = 52), after as-needed reinjections (PRN group) and the second (n = 38) after reinjections according to the Inject and Extend dosing method (IaE group). Patients' baseline characteristics, type of choroidal neovascularization, and Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study initial and final visual acuity (at 52 ± 4 weeks) were recorded in each group.

Heterozygosity for a single mutation in the ABCC6 gene may closely mimic PXE: consequences of this phenotype overlap for the definition of PXE.

Objectives: To illustrate a phenotypic overlap consisting of usual, but limited, or atypical manifestations of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) between heterozygous carriers of a single ABCC6 mutation and patients diagnosed with PXE, carriers of homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations.

Design: Evaluation for full and typical, incomplete, mild, or overlooked PXE during a 5-year period (2001-2005) based on the following 1992 expert consensus conference items: (1) yellowish papular skin eruption, (2) dermal elastorrhexis and mineralization of elastic fibers in lesional skin, and (3) angioid streaks. Testing for ABCC6 mutations was performed in all cases after informed consent.
