This study has innovative aspects related to the use of sequential inoculation technique in the coffee bean fermentation process: the inoculation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum followed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the fermentation of coffee fruit for the production of specialty natural coffees. The objective was to evaluate the effect of this technique and of the total fermentation time on the sensory attributes of the coffee beverage and on the organic acid profile, bioactive compounds, and fatty acid profile of the beans. The fermentation of coffee fruit with sequential inoculation resulted in greater acidity of the beverage and contributed to increases of up to 2 points in coffee fermented.

We describe the case of a patient in whom anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome developed during treatment with phenytoin and progressed when therapy was changed to phenobarbital. Although therapeutic options remain controversial, corticosteroids and IV immunoglobulin were used in our patient. The patient had a complete recovery, suggesting the potential benefit of corticosteroids and IV immunoglobulin for anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome.

Although immunization practices have dramatically reduced the incidence of measles, several populations remain at risk of the disease. Modified measles may occur in those who received immune globulin in childhood. Atypical measles, often confused with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, may develop in those who received inactivated measles virus vaccine and were subsequently exposed to the natural disease.

We report the results obtained with a radioimmunoassay for serum somatomedin B (SmB) in 29 normal subjects, in 33 pituitary dwarfs (GHD) and 6 acromegalic patients. There were no significant differences between the basal SmB levels of the GHD and the normal subjects higher value observed in the acromegalic group (p < 0.01).

Sera obtained randomly from 37 patients seen at a family practice center were evaluated for protective antibodies against tetanus and diphtheria using in vivo toxin neutralization methods. The patients' ages ranged from 1 to 99 years. Seventy-four percent and 83 percent of patients were found to have protective antitoxin titers against tetanus and diphtheria, respectively.
