A multispecies outbreak of carbapenem-resistant bacteria harboring the bla gene in a non-classical transposon element.

Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most frequent KPC-producing bacteria. The bla gene is frequently embedded in Tn4401 transposon, and less frequently in non-Tn4401 elements (NTE) variants I-III. The first case of KPC in the UC-CHRISTUS Clinical Hospital was detected in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Background: Carbapenems are the preferred β-lactamics for treatment for infections caused by enterobacteria producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL); however, clinical studies show effectiveness of piperacillin/tazobactam in certain infections by Escherichia coli ESBL producers.

Aim: To determine the clinical and micro-biological cure with piperacillin/tazobactam in patients with infections caused by E. coli ESBL producers, CTXM type.
