Neuroinflammation drives sex-dependent effects on pain and negative affect in a murine model of repeated mild traumatic brain injury.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 75% of reported cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are mild, where chronic pain and depression are 2 of the most common symptoms. In this study, we used a murine model of repeated mild TBI to characterize the associated pain hypersensitivity and affective-like behavior and to what extent microglial reactivity contributes to these behavioral phenotypes. Male and female C57BL/6J mice underwent sham or repeated mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) and were tested for up to 9 weeks postinjury, where an anti-inflammatory/neuroprotective drug (minocycline) was introduced at 5 weeks postinjury in the drinking water.

Despite a burgeoning older-adult population, the number of health-care professionals with geriatric expertise continues to lag behind. In 2014, the American Geriatrics Society's position statement encouraged interprofessional training for health-care professionals. Telementoring remotely connects clinicians with specialists for education and group mentoring.

Toward user-centered assistive technologies for aging in place with cognitive impairment: a survey.

Purpose: To reduce the burden of Alzheimer's disease, the use of assistive technologies for patients and their informal caregivers is considered essential. However, these technologies are made as "one size fits all" instead of being tailored to accommodate people with varying degrees of cognitive impairment and those with diverse races/ethnicities. Thus, the aim of this survey was to determine whether the types of assistance needed most, and the technology used by those with cognitive impairment differed by race (White/non-Hispanics, Black or African Americans, and Hispanic/Latinos or Puerto Ricans) and severity of dementia (mild, moderate, severe).

Meeting the challenges in conducting research in vulnerable older adults with self-neglect-notes from a field team.

Gaining a systematic understanding of possible ways to increase the quality and lifespan of older adults experiencing self-neglect has unique challenges. These challenges include identifying self-neglect in the community and navigating levels of cognitive, physical, and/or psychological difficulties in this population that impact recruitment, consent, and accurate data collection. Conducting quality research under some of the environmental self-neglect conditions such as squalor, animal and insect infestations and no utilities can also challenge planned study protocols and study validity.

Interlaboratory Evaluation of Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 as a Salmonella Surrogate for Validating Thermal Treatment of Multiple Low-Moisture Foods.

Abstract: This multi-institutional study assessed the efficacy of Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 as a nonpathogenic Salmonella surrogate for thermal processing of nonfat dry milk powder, peanut butter, almond meal, wheat flour, ground black pepper, and date paste. Each product was analyzed by two laboratories (five independent laboratories total), with the lead laboratory inoculating (E. faecium or a five-strain Salmonella enterica serovar cocktail of Agona, Reading, Tennessee, Mbandaka, and Montevideo) and equilibrating the product to the target water activity before shipping.

Pharmacy-Led Medication Reconciliation Program Reduces Adverse Drug Events and Improves Satisfaction in a Community Hospital.

Background: Pharmacy-led medication reconciliation identifies and corrects medication errors that can potentially cause moderate to severe harm. This research sought to identify the impact of pharmacy-led medication reconciliation on patient outcomes and describe the changes in healthcare workers' perceptions of the program.

Methods: A pharmacy-led admission medication reconciliation program pilot started in July 2019, and a discharge medication reconciliation proof of concept was tested in September 2020 at a 432-bed hospital.

Development of a Conceptual Framework for Severe Self-Neglect (SN) by Modifying the CREST Model for Self-Neglect.

Self-neglect is an inability or refusal to meet one's own basic needs as accepted by societal norms and is the most common report received by state agencies charged with investigating abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults. Self-neglect is often seen in addition to one or multiple conditions of frailty, mild to severe dementia, poor sleep and depression. While awareness of elder self-neglect as a public health condition and intervention has significantly risen in the past decade as evidenced by the increasing amount of literature available, research on self-neglect still lacks comprehensiveness and clarity since its inception to the medical literature in the late 1960s.

Elder Abuse Education Using Standardized Patient Simulation in an Undergraduate Nursing Program.

Background: With more than 1 million older adults being abused each year, it is imperative for nurses to be knowledgeable about signs and symptoms of elder abuse, assessment, and interventions. This article describes a three-part learning strategy consisting of lecture, simulation using standardized patients (SPs), and debriefing to educate prelicensure nursing students about how to identify, assess, and report elder abuse. Furthermore, the effects of the teaching strategies were assessed.

Patient Versus Informal Caregiver Proxy Reports of Pain Interference in Persons With Dementia.

Pain assessment and treatment is challenging among persons with dementia (PWDs). To better understand reports of pain interference, we examined ratings made by PWDs, as well as corresponding ratings about PWDs, as reported by the caregiver. We aimed to assess alignment between and predictors of caregiver and PWD report of pain interference.

Chronic Environmental and Occupational Lead Exposure and Kidney Function among African Americans: Dallas Lead Project II.

We examined the effects of lead on kidney function in occupationally and environmentally exposed adults from a Dallas lead smelter community that was the site of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund clean-up. All subjects were African Americans-a racial group that bears a disproportionate burden of kidney disease. : A two-phase health screening was conducted.

Improving medicolegal death investigative gaps of fatal elder abuse.

The purpose of this brief is to present several case vignettes that illustrate omissions in the investigation of elder deaths. These vignettes demonstrate the need for a standardized approach in the conduct of medicolegal investigations of fatal elder abuse. For each of the described oversights, a recommendation is offered to address the gap in investigation processes, which in turn could improve the determination of cause and manner of elder death.

Thermal Inactivation of Salmonella Agona in Low-Water Activity Foods: Predictive Models for the Combined Effect of Temperature, Water Activity, and Food Component.

Salmonella can survive in low-moisture, high-protein, and high-fat foods for several years. Despite nationwide outbreaks and recalls due to the presence of Salmonella in low-moisture foods, information on thermal inactivation of Salmonella in these products is limited. This project evaluated the impact of water activity (a), temperature, and food composition on thermal inactivation of Salmonella enterica serovar Agona in defined high-protein and high-fat model food matrices.

Salmonella Inactivation During Extrusion of an Oat Flour Model Food.

Little research exists on Salmonella inactivation during extrusion processing, yet many outbreaks associated with low water activity foods since 2006 were linked to extruded foods. The aim of this research was to study Salmonella inactivation during extrusion of a model cereal product. Oat flour was inoculated with Salmonella enterica serovar Agona, an outbreak strain isolated from puffed cereals, and processed using a single-screw extruder at a feed rate of 75 kg/h and a screw speed of 500 rpm.

Survival of Salmonella on chamomile, peppermint, and green tea during storage and subsequent survival or growth following tea brewing.

The survival of Salmonella on dried chamomile flowers, peppermint leaves, and green tea leaves stored under different conditions was examined. Survival and growth of Salmonella was also assessed after subsequent brewing using dried inoculated teas. A Salmonella enterica serovar cocktail was inoculated onto different dried tea leaves or flowers to give starting populations of approximately 10 log CFU/g.

Migraine and reward system-or is it aversive?

Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder with grave consequences for both the individual and society. This review will focus on recent literature investigating how brain structures implicated in reward and aversion contribute to the genesis of migraine pain. There exist many overlapping and interacting brain regions within pain and reward circuitry that contribute to negative affect and subjective experience of pain.

Multicellular bacteria deploy the type VI secretion system to preemptively strike neighboring cells.

The Type VI Secretion System (T6SS) functions in bacteria as a contractile nanomachine that punctures and delivers lethal effectors to a target cell. Virtually nothing is known about the lifestyle or physiology that dictates when bacteria normally produce their T6SS, which prevents a clear understanding of how bacteria benefit from its action in their natural habitat. Proteus mirabilis undergoes a characteristic developmental process to coordinate a multicellular swarming behavior and will discriminate itself from another Proteus isolate during swarming, resulting in a visible boundary termed a Dienes line.

The novel role of IL-7 ligation to IL-7 receptor in myeloid cells of rheumatoid arthritis and collagen-induced arthritis.

Although the role of IL-7 and IL-7R has been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the majority of the studies have focused on the effect of IL-7/IL-7R in T cell development and function. Our novel data, however, document that patients with RA and greater disease activity have higher levels of IL-7, IL-7R, and TNF-α in RA monocytes, suggesting a feedback regulation between IL-7/IL-7R and TNF-α cascades in myeloid cells that is linked to chronic disease progression. Investigations into the involved mechanism showed that IL-7 is a novel and potent chemoattractant that attracts IL-7R(+) monocytes through activation of the PI3K/AKT1 and ERK pathways at similar concentrations of IL-7 detected in RA synovial fluid.

Eruptive xanthoma: a case report.

Eruptive xanthomatosis is a papular skin disorder resulting from hyperlipidemia, specifically hypertriglyceridemia. It is characterized by yellowish red papules concentrated on extensor surfaces of the arms and legs. The hyperlipidemia responsible for this disorder can be caused by a primary genetic defect, a secondary disorder, or both.

Role of the CCL21 and CCR7 pathways in rheumatoid arthritis angiogenesis.

Objective: To determine the role of CCL21 and its receptor CCR7 in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: Histologic studies were performed to compare the expression of CCR7 and CCL21 in RA synovial tissue. Next, the role of CCL21 and/or CCR7 in angiogenesis was examined using in vitro chemotaxis, tube formation, and in vivo Matrigel plug assays.

Anti-CXCL5 therapy ameliorates IL-17-induced arthritis by decreasing joint vascularization.

IL-17-induced joint inflammation is associated with increased angiogenesis. However, the mechanism by which IL-17 mediates angiogenesis is undefined. Therefore, the pathologic role of CXCL1 and CXCL5 was investigated in arthritis mediated by local expression of IL-17, employing a neutralizing antibody to each chemokine.
