Adipopenia Is the Rapid Screening Tool that Best Predicts Mortality in Patients with Decompensated Cirrhosis: Results of a Prospective Study.

Background And Aims: Patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) often have malnutrition (MN), which can be associated with decompensation, infection, and death. The aims were to determine: the prevalence of MN in patients with LC and ascites, its impact on mortality, and the relationship between MN and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP).

Methods: Nutritional status (NS) was analysed in cirrhotic patients, experiencing their first episode of ascites, who were consecutively admitted at two clinical liver centres between November 2014 and October 2016.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage in pancreatic cancer and cholangitis: A case report.

Background: Head pancreatic cancers often present with clinical challenges requiring biliary drainage for chemotherapy or palliative scope. If usual endoscopic modalities fail or if percutaneous approach is not feasible, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided biliary drainage can be considered. Here we describe and discuss an interesting clinical case in which EUS-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) was chosen to treat acute severe cholangitis in a patient with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Clinical Characteristics of COVID-19 Patients With Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Northern Italy: A Single-Center Cohort Study.

Introduction: The most typical presentation of COVID-19 is an acute respiratory syndrome whose most common symptoms include fever, cough, and dyspnea. However, gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea and nausea/vomiting, are increasingly reported in patients affected by COVID-19. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and time of onset of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients affected by COVID-19 and to find potential associations between gastrointestinal symptoms and clinical outcomes.

Natural history of SARS-CoV-2 infection in healthcare workers in Northern Italy.

At present, the time-frame used for the quarantine of individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the entire duration of symptoms plus 14 days after symptom recovery; however, no data have been reported specifically for healthcare workers (HCWs). In the study population of 142 HCWs with COVID-19, the mean time for viral clearance was 31.8 days.

Inflammatory bowel disease in a colorectal cancer screening population: Diagnosis and follow-up.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is usually diagnosed in subjects with gastrointestinal symptoms, but may also be asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally.

Aims: to determine the prevalence of IBD in asymptomatic adults.

Methods: we identified subjects who underwent colonoscopy between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2019 in a regional colorectal cancer screening program with endoscopic findings suggestive of IBD, and retrieved their clinical, histological and therapeutic information.

Background: In accordance with the scientific literature heavy alcohol consumption (>50g per day) represents a risk factor for several diseases development, including cancer. However, the oncogenic role of light alcohol drinking (<12.5g per day) is still unknown.

Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation of Dietary Intake in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis.

There are very few reports about the intake of nutrients for the development or progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The aim of this study was to identify the dietary habits and the nutrient intake in patients with NASH, in comparison to chronic hepatitis C (HCV)-related patients. We prospectively evaluated the intake of macronutrients and micronutrients in 124 NAFLD and 162 HCV patients, compared to 2326 subjects as a control group.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita: report of 22 cases.

Twenty-two cases of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita were evaluated during an 8-year period. All but two patients were examined in the first year of life; 14 of the 22 (64%) were female infants. Four patients had focal cutaneous atrophy associated with the reticulated vascular pattern, and eight had ulcerations of involved skin.

Treatment of resistant severe psoriasis with systemic cyclosporine.

Four patients with severe psoriasis have been treated with oral cyclosporine for 6 months. Two had generalized erythroderma and two had extensive plaque-type psoriasis; all had either become unresponsive to or were unable to use other accepted treatments. All four patients responded rapidly and were completely clear of psoriasis within 3 weeks of beginning therapy.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and hypercalcemia.

An elderly man was admitted to the hospital with a large squamous cell carcinoma involving the right side of the chest wall. The patient was severely confused, and evaluation revealed pronounced hypercalcemia. With total surgical removal of the tumor, the serum calcium level fell to normal and his confusion cleared.

Actinic cheilitis: a review of the etiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment.

With today's increase in sun worshippers, the number of sun-induced skin lesions is increasing. Actinic cheilitis is the counterpart of actinic keratosis of the skin and can also develop into squamous cell carcinoma. In this article we review the etiology, clinical spectrum, histology, differential diagnosis, and treatment of actinic cheilitis.

Livedo reticularis.

A middle-aged woman was admitted to the hospital with livedo reticularis of the extremities in addition to nonspecific symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism. The livedo reticularis disappeared with treatment of the hypothyroidism. Although livedo reticularis has been reported previously to be associated with thyroid disease, this association is rare.
