Metals such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), vanadium (V), have been determined in species of Mediterranean marine organisms collected from areas supposed to be at background contamination levels. The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) approach was adopted for the determination of all the metals. Arsenic, Cd and Pb determined in the 42 samples, do not exceed the pertinent maximum level except a sample of hake.

Background: Stx toxin is a member of the AB5 family of bacterial toxins: the active A subunit has N-glycosidase activity against 28S rRNA, resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells, and the pentamer ligand B subunits (StxB) bind to globotria(tetra)osylceramide receptors (Gb3/Gb4) on the cell membrane. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains (STEC) may produce Stx1 and/or Stx2 and variants. Strains carrying Stx2 are considered more virulent and related to the majority of outbreaks, besides being usually associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans.

We recently described morgana as an essential protein able to regulate centrosome duplication and genomic stability, by inhibiting ROCK. Here we show that morgana (+/-) mice spontaneously develop a lethal myeloproliferative disease resembling human atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML), preceded by ROCK hyperactivation, centrosome amplification, and cytogenetic abnormalities in the bone marrow (BM). Moreover, we found that morgana is underexpressed in the BM of patients affected by atypical CML, a disorder of poorly understood molecular basis, characterized by nonrecurrent cytogenetic abnormalities.

Sheep constitute an important source of zoonotic pathogens as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). In this study, the prevalence, serotypes and virulence profiles of STEC were investigated among 130 healthy sheep from small and medium farms in southern Brazil. STEC was isolated from 65 (50%) of the tested animals and detected in all flocks.

Case Presentation: In this study, both Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) and atypical enteropathogenic (EPEC) strains were identified in a stool sample from a healthy child, and they were serotyped as Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) ONT : H19 and atypical enteropathogenic (EPEC) O37 : H45.

Conclusion: This is the first report, to our knowledge, of a concomitant presence of diarrhoeagenic (DEC) strains in an asymptomatic child.

The initial treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase (CP-CML) represents a complex process, which includes a prompt and precise diagnosis, the choice among three available tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and the initial management of care for these patients, which will protract over a very long period of time. This manuscript summarizes different data on activity, side effects, and supportive measures available for each TKI, the need for particular care in the logistical organization of CML management, the scenario which will be opened by the future availability of generic imatinib. The opinion of the authors is that imatinib remains the first-line treatment for CP-CML; this strategy, accompanied by intensive monitoring and possible dose modification/drug switch after the initial 3-12 months of treatment presently assures a normal life expectancy to the population of newly diagnosed patients with CP-CML.

Pectin is a natural biopolymer that forms, in the presence of divalent cations, ionic-bound gels typifying a large class of biological gels stabilized by non-covalent cross-links. We investigate and compare the kinetics of formation and aging of pectin gels obtained either through external gelation via perfusion of free Ca(2+) ions, or by internal gelation due to the supply of the same ions from the dissolution of CaCO3 nanoparticles. The microscopic dynamics obtained with photon correlation imaging, a novel optical technique that allows obtaining the microscopic dynamics of the sample while retaining the spatial resolution of imaging techniques, is contrasted with macroscopic rheological measurements at constant strain.

We provide a general microscopic theory of the scattering cross-section and of the refractive index for a system of interacting colloidal particles, exact at second order in the molecular polarizabilities. In particular: (a) we show that the structural features of the suspension are encoded into the forward scattered field by multiple scattering effects, whose contribution is essential for the so-called "optical theorem" to hold in the presence of interactions; (b) we investigate the role of radiation reaction on light extinction; (c) we discuss our results in the framework of effective medium theories, presenting a general result for the effective refractive index valid, whatever the structural properties of the suspension, in the limit of particles much larger than the wavelength; (d) by discussing strongly-interacting suspensions, we unravel subtle anomalous dispersion effects for the suspension refractive index.

Fish and fishery products may represent one of the main sources of dietary exposure to persistent toxic substances (PTSs) such as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans, and biphenyls; polybromodiphenyl ethers; organochlorine pesticides; perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate; and inorganic mercury and methyl mercury. In this study, PTS contamination of Mediterranean fish and crustaceans caught in Italian coastal waters was investigated in order to increase the representativeness of the occurrence database for wild species. The objectives were to verify the suitability of regulatory limits for PTSs, identify background concentrations values, if any, and examine the possible sources of variability when assessing the chemical body burdens of aquatic species.

Plasmid encoded toxin (Pet) is a serine protease originally described in enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) prototype strain 042 whose entire characterization was essentially obtained from studies performed with the purified toxin. Here we show that Pet is not exclusive to EAEC. Atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) strains, isolated from diarrhea cases, express Pet and its detection in supernatants of infected HEp-2 cells coincides with the appearance of cell damage, which, in turn, were similar to those described with purified Pet.

By exploiting photon correlation imaging and ghost particle velocimetry, two novel optical correlation techniques particularly suited to the investigation of the microscopic dynamics of spatially heterogeneous samples, we investigate the settling and restructuring dynamics of colloidal gels generated by short-ranged depletion interactions. Three distinct regions can be clearly set apart within the liquid-liquid coexistence region of the phase diagram where gel formation is observed. When depletion forces are barely sufficient to drive the system within the metastable region, an initial disordered gel hosts the rapid nucleation of crystallites, which stress the gel structure until it fully collapses, leading to the formation of a macroscopic colloidal crystal.

Colloid sedimentation has played a seminal role in the development of statistical physics thanks to the celebrated experiments by Perrin, which provided a concrete demonstration of molecular reality and gave strong support to Einstein's theory of Brownian motion. This review, which mostly focuses on settling at low Peclét number, where Brownian fluctuations are dominant, aims to show that a lot more can be learnt both from the sedimentation equilibrium and from the particle settling dynamics of a wide class of systems, ranging from simple colloids to mesogenic suspensions, from soft solids to active particles and living organisms. At the same time, the occurrence of unexpected and surprising effects brings about challenging questions in statistical and fluid mechanics that make sedimentation an exciting field of research.

Air samples were collected in Venice during summer 2009 and 2012 to measure gas and particulate concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). PCB-11, considered a marker for non-Aroclor contamination of the environment, was found for the first time in the Venetian lagoon and in Europe. An investigation on sources has been conducted, evidencing traffic as the major source of PAHs, whereas PCBs have a similar composition to Aroclor 1248 and 1254; in 2009 a release of PCN-42 has been hypothesized.
