Genistein is the major active component of isoflavone, with a chemical composition and a biological effect that is similar to that of estrogens, which prevents the degradation of cartilage; however, its underlying mechanisms of action remain unknown.

Salvianolic acid B (SalB) is a water‑soluble phenolic compound, extractable from Salvia miltiorrhiza, and has previously been demonstrated to reverse tumor multidrug resistance (MDR) in colon cancer cells. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are closely associated with drug resistance. Therefore, establishing a nude mouse model bearing human colon CSCs is important for the study of the mechanisms underlying colon cancer drug resistance as well as the reversal of drug resistance.

Zhi-Zhen-Fang (ZZR), a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula, has been clinically used in China to treat drug-resistant colorectal cancer (CRC) patients as an adjuvant. In this study, the efficacy of ZZR in suppressing multidrug resistance (MDR) on CRC was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. We observed that ZZR enhanced the sensitivity of chemotherapeutic drugs and induced apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent mannner in CRC MDR cells.
