Purpose: Adolescents and young adults have the highest prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), accounting for more than 50% of all reported infections. An especially high-risk group includes adolescents in juvenile or correctional facilities.

Methods: This retrospective analysis was conducted at the only juvenile detention facility in the State of Hawai'i from 2014 to 2017.

Despite the availability of HPV prophylactic vaccines, uptake has been suboptimal in the US. In the state of Hawaii, HPV vaccine coverage has decreased among females and remains low among males aged 13-17. The reasons for low uptake are unknown and may indicate the existence of critical barriers to HPV vaccination.
