Environmental and Climate Change Initiatives in Nursing Education.

Climate change has been labeled the greatest threat to public health and to global health in the 21st century. Addressing climate change has also been reframed as the greatest opportunity for global health in the 21st century, providing a more proactive lens through which to plan and implement actions. Significant climate change impacts to human health are numerous and mounting, including the direct effects of heatwaves, thermal stress and changed frequency or intensity of other extreme weather events.

Rural Families' Process of Re-Forming Environmental Health Risk Messages.

Purpose: This study was undertaken to explore how rural low-income families with children process health information following a nurse-delivered intervention designed to reduce environmental risks in their homes.

Design And Method: Grounded theory methodology with a constructivist approach was used to conduct the study. Semistructured interviews of 10 primary child caregivers in rural low-income families who had participated in an environmental risk reduction intervention were completed from 2009 to 2011.

Implementing AACN's recommendations for environmental sustainability in colleges of nursing: from concept to impact.

In 2011, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) released a guidance report titled Toward an Environmentally Sustainable Academic Enterprise: An AACN Guide for Nursing Education. The report was developed in response to a vivid slide presentation at an AACN meeting depicting the deleterious public and environmental health effects of global industrialization. Using the generative nursing model to reframe nursing student transition to practice.

New nurses are leaving hospitals in record numbers after fulfilling their initial employment obligations. Reasons for turnover relate to job dissatisfaction in the form of stressful working conditions, disempowerment, insufficient resources, difficult working relationships, and poor management. The authors discuss an approach for preparing students to manage factors that lead to burnout and new nurse turnover using the Generative Leadership Model as a framework.

Grand Multiparous Women's Perceptions of Birthing, Nursing Care, and Childbirth Technology.

This qualitative descriptive study explored grand multiparous women's perceptions of the evolving changes in birthing, nursing care, and technology. A purposive sample of grand multiparous women (N = 13) from rural, eastern Washington State were interviewed as they shared their 105 birth stories. Eight themes were identified: (1) providing welcome care, (2) offering choices, (3) following birth plans, (4) establishing trust and rapport, (5) being an advocate, (6) providing reassurance and support, (7) relying on electronic fetal monitors and assessments versus nursing presence, and (8) having epidurals coupled with loss of bodily cues.

Ethical issues in the qualitative researcher--participant relationship.

Qualitative research poses ethical issues and challenges unique to the study of human beings. In developing the interpersonal relationship that is critical to qualitative research, investigator and participant engage in a dialogic process that often evokes stories and memories that are remembered and reconstituted in ways that otherwise would not occur. Ethical issues are raised when this relationship not only provides qualitative research data, but also leads to some degree of therapeutic interaction for the participant.

Native Hawaiian women and the experience of breast cancer.

This article describes a qualitative inquiry into the experiences of Native Hawaiian women living through and beyond a diagnosis of breast cancer. Native Hawaiian women have increased incidence and mortality breast cancer rates compared with other ethnic groups in Hawaii. Health promotion programs targeted at Native Hawaiians have often failed because of cultural inappropriateness.

The Population-Focused Analysis Project for teaching community health.

New instructional methodologies that foster student inquiry, critical thinking, accountability, group work, and self-mastery skills must be created to meet the challenges of modern community health nursing. Bold steps need to be taken to examine current nursing curricula and institute innovative teaching-learning methods to achieve these outcomes. Designing a unique way of providing clinical practice in community assessment is one step toward achieving these goals.
