Purpose: To assess whether night-time increases in mechanical loading negatively impact respiratory muscle function in COPD and whether compensatory increases in inspiratory neural drive (IND) are adequate to stabilize ventilatory output and arterial oxygen saturation, especially during sleep when wakefulness drive is withdrawn.

Methods: 21 patients with moderate-to-severe COPD and 20 age-/sex-matched healthy controls (CTRL) participated in a prospective, cross-sectional, one-night study to assess the impact of COPD on serial awake, supine inspiratory capacity (IC) measurements and continuous dynamic respiratory muscle function (esophageal manometry) and IND (diaphragm electromyography, EMGdi) in supine sleep.

Femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies combined with theoretical calculations were performed to investigate the formation mechanisms of quinone methides (QMs) from 4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine (). In acetonitrile (ACN), the singlet excited state of ((S)) with the -form underwent a thermodynamically favorable and ultrafast ESIPT to produce the singlet excited state QM, which could either relax first into highly vibrational states of its ground state followed by hydrogen transfer to return to the starting compound or alternatively may undergo a dehydrogenation to produce a radical species (-R). In ACN-HO, (S) interacted with water molecules to form a solvated species, which induced water-assisted ESPT to the pyridine nitrogen to generate the singlet excited state QM in a concerted asynchronous manner that was initiated by deprotonation of the phenolic OH.

Multiple rice GT61 members were demonstrated to be xylan arabinosyltransferases (XATs) mediating 3-O-arabinosylation of xylan and the functions of XATs and xylan 2-O-xylosyltransferases were shown to be conserved in grass species. Xylan is the major hemicellulose in the cell walls of grass species and it is typified by having arabinofuranosyl (Araf) substitutions. In this report, we demonstrated that four previously uncharacterized, Golgi-localized glycosyltransferases residing in clade A or B of the rice GT61 family were able to mediate 3-O-arabinosylation of xylan when heterologously expressed in the Arabidopsis gux1/2/3 triple mutant.

The photolysis reactions of (8-cyano-7-hydroxyquinolin-2-yl)methyl (CyHQ)-caged amines have been investigated using time-resolved spectroscopy methods. Unexpectedly, an unconventional Hofmann-Martius rearrangement reaction with high yield and regioselectivity occurred during the photolysis of some CyHQ-protected dialkylanilines (such as compounds 1a and 2a). We exploit kinks and notches in the UK personal tax schedule over a 40-year period to investigate how taxpayers respond to income tax and social security contributions. At kinks, where the marginal rate rises, we find bunching by company owner-managers and the self-employed, but not those with only employment income. Responses to notches, where the average rate rises, provide compelling evidence that this is because most employees face substantial frictions: fewer than a quarter bunch even where doing so would increase both consumption and leisure.

Introduction: Evaluation of the intensity and quality of activity-related dyspnea is potentially useful in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present study sought to examine associations between qualitative dyspnea descriptors, dyspnea intensity ratings, dynamic respiratory mechanics, and exercise capacity during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in COPD and healthy controls.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 261 patients with mild-to-very severe COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 s, 62 ± 25%pred) and 94 age-matched controls (forced expiratory volume in 1 s, 114 ± 14%pred) completed an incremental cycle CPET to determine peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak).
