Article Synopsis
  • Perioperative anxiety in pediatric patients can negatively impact outcomes, and parental presence during anesthesia induction (PPIA) is a method explored to reduce this anxiety, although its effectiveness is debated.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis examined relevant literature, ultimately analyzing 21 studies involving over 9,500 participants, focusing on the effects of PPIA on both child and caregiver anxiety levels.
  • Results indicated no significant difference in preoperative anxiety levels for children and parents, but PPIA did correlate with lower anxiety scores at the time of induction; moreover, a high percentage of parents favored being present in future surgeries, suggesting general acceptance of PPIA.

Objective: To examine the effectiveness of Eustachian tube procedures for the treatment of baro-challenge Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, databases, including PubMed (National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health), Scopus (Elsevier), and CINAHL (EBSCO), were searched for articles examining the effectiveness of Eustachian tube procedures for baro-challenge Eustachian tube dysfunction. Outcome measures included symptom resolution, ability to return to work, equalization problems (EP) scores, Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire (ETDQ-7) scores, and pressure chamber testing parameters.
