Article Synopsis
  • Targeting cardiovascular disease (CVD) in military health care is critical, but it's unclear how often behavioral health consultants (BHCs) help address related risk factors like tobacco use, obesity, and depression.
  • A study analyzing electronic health records from military clinics over three years found low referral rates to BHCs for patients with CVD (1.5%), tobacco use (5.3%), obesity (3.4%), and depression (20.0%).
  • The findings indicate that BHCs are underutilized in addressing CVD in military settings, suggesting the need for further research and strategies to increase their usage in health care systems.

The functional outcomes and appointment characteristics of Beneficiaries (N = 5402) within the military healthcare system were assessed.
