NETosis in Surgery: Pathophysiology, Prevention, and Treatment.

Objective: To provide surgeons with an understanding of the latest research on NETosis, including the pathophysiology and treatment of conditions involving neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the care of surgical patients.

Background: A novel function of neutrophils, the formation of NETs, was described in 2004. Neutrophils form mesh-like structures of extruded decondensed chromatin, comprising DNA and histones decorated with bactericidal proteins.

Increased rate of listening difficulties in autistic children.

Introduction: Auditory challenges are both common and disruptive for autistic children and evidence suggests that listening difficulties may be linked to academic underachievement (Ashburner, Ziviani & Rodger, 2008). Such deficits may also contribute to issues with attention, behavior, and communication (Ashburner et al., 2008; Riccio, Cohen, Garrison & Smith, 2005).

A 6-month pilot of a collaborative clinic between genitourinary medicine services and a young persons' sexual health clinic.

Objective: To investigate whether situating a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic within a Brook centre is successful in attracting a younger client group than that traditionally seen in GUM clinics within hospitals.

Design: A descriptive study of a 6-month pilot clinic.

Setting: Brook in Manchester.
