Background: Patients diagnosed with Marfan syndrome or a related syndrome require frequent aorta monitoring using imaging techniques like transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and computed tomography (CT). Accurate aortic measurement is crucial, as even slight enlargement (>2 mm) often necessitates surgical intervention. The 2022 ACC/AHA guideline for Aortic Disease Diagnosis and Management includes updated imaging recommendations.

Is Marfan Syndrome Associated with Primary Structural Changes in the Left Atrium?

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal-dominant multisystem connective tissue disorder that is based on mutations in the gene and variably affects different organs, including the heart. In this study, we investigated cardiac function with a focus on the left atrium (LA) in a relatively large cohort of patients with MFS. After screening of 1165 patients that had been examined in our center between 2016 and 2020, 231 adult MFS patients with and without aortic operation were included in our study and compared to a healthy control group ( = 106).

[Frequency and risk factors associated with post-stroke dementia-an observational study on stroke patients without premorbid cognitive impairment].

Background: Longitudinal studies on cognitive outcomes after stroke revealed heterogeneous results and the underlying pathology and risk factors for so-called post-stroke dementia are unclear.

Objective: To assess long-term cognitive performance changes in patients after the first ischemic stroke and to evaluate possible risk factors for post-stroke dementia.

Material And Methods: In this study 66 clinically mildly affected patients aged 54-87 years without a history of dementia underwent extensive neuropsychological assessment after first ever ischemic stroke and again 6 months after the event (follow-up assessment).

Sex and Gender Differences in Rilpivirine based ART - Data from the HIVCENTER Frankfurt.

Objective: While Rilpivirine has shown high overall response rates in treatment-naïve patients without sex and gender specific differences in clinical trials, Sex and gender specific data in treatment experienced patients receiving rilpivirine are still limited. We conducted a 48 week efficacy and safety analysis in naïve and treatment experienced men and women using retrospective data from the HIVCENTER Frankfurt.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective observational study data of all patients who received a rilpivirine based regimen at the HIVCENTER between March 2011 and December 2015 were analyzed.

Diffraction-limited deep focusing into biological tissue is challenging due to aberrations that lead to a broadening of the focal spot. The diffraction limit can be restored by employing aberration correction for example with a deformable mirror. However, this results in a bulky setup due to the required beam folding.

We report on the characterization of an image plate and its absolute calibration to electrons in the low keV energy range (1-30 keV). In our case, an Agfa MD4.0 without protection layer was used in combination with a Fuji FLA7000 scanner.

Capsaicin 8 % as a cutaneous patch (Qutenza™): analgesic effect on patients with peripheral neuropathic pain.

Evaluation of the analgesic effect after a single application of the capsaicin 8 % cutaneous patch (Qutenza™) in 37 patients suffering from painful, distal symmetric polyneuropathy (PNP) for an average of 5 years. Patients ranged from 40 to 78 years of age and 22 subjects were HIV-positive. Patients were observed 4 weeks prior to 12 weeks post administration.

Evidence for the gastric cytoprotective effect of centrally injected agmatine.

Agmatine (decarboxylated arginine) exerts cytoprotective action in several tissues, such as in the brain, heart or kidneys, but there is still controversy over the effects of agmatine on the gastric mucosa. The aim of the present study was to reveal the potential gastroprotective action of agmatine by using an acid-independent ulcer model to clarify which receptors and peripheral factors are involved in it. Gastric mucosal damage was induced by acidified ethanol.

Stigmatizing attitudes towards people with pedophilia and their malleability among psychotherapists in training.

Offering counseling and psychotherapy to patients with pedophilia is considered an essential part of sexual abuse prevention by many experts in the field. Yet, professionals' willingness to offer treatment might be compromised by stigmatizing attitudes towards these patients. In the present study, we developed and tested a 10-min online intervention (including educational material and a video about a person with pedophilia) to reduce stigma and increase motivation to work with this particular patient group.

Specific loss of cellular L-selectin on CD4(+) T cells is associated with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy development during HIV infection.

HIV(+) progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) patients had a significantly lower expression of CD62L on CD4(+) T cells (P < 0.001) when compared with HIV(+) patients who did not develop PML. CD62L expression on CD4(+) T cells did not correlate with parameters such as CDC stage, CD4(+) cell percentage (of total CD3(+) T cells), CD4(+) cell counts, virus count, or clinical parameters.

The connectomes of nervous systems or parts there of are becoming important subjects of study as the amount of connectivity data increases. Because most tract-tracing studies are performed on the rat, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the amygdala connectome of this species resulting in a meta-study. The data were imported into the neuroVIISAS system, where regions of the connectome are organized in a controlled ontology and network analysis can be performed.

[Vital animal predation of the genital region caused by a mongrel dog].

A 79-year-old man, who was in a helpless situation due to cardiac decompensation, suffered dog bite injuries on the left thigh and in the genital region while still alive. Two extensive soft-tissue defects with contused and bruised wound edges were surrounded by multiple slit-like skin lesions. The outer genitals were almost completely missing.

First trimester placental and myometrial blood perfusion measured by 3D power Doppler in normal and unfavourable outcome pregnancies.

Introduction: To evaluate whether 3D placental and myometrial power Doppler blood perfusion in the first trimester can be used to detect risk pregnancies.

Methods: 3D power Doppler vascularization index (VI) and flow index (FI) of the entire placenta and the neighbouring myometrium were separately measured in the first trimester in all women with singleton pregnancies during a period of three months. In addition we measured placental volume, placental quotient, PAPP-A, as well as uterine artery at 12 and 22 weeks (mean PI and mean notch) and compared those data with the pregnancy outcome.
