Effect of Chitosan-Diosgenin Combination on Wound Healing.

The difficult-to-heal wounds continue to be a problem for modern medicine. Chitosan and diosgenin possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects making them relevant substances for wound treatment. That is why this work aimed to study the effect of the combined application of chitosan and diosgenin on a mouse skin wound model.

In Vivo Toxicity, Redox-Modulating Capacity and Intestinal Permeability of Novel Aroylhydrazone Derivatives as Anti-Tuberculosis Agents.

The emergence and spread of strains resistant to many or all anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs require the development of new compounds both efficient and with minimal side effects. Structure-activity-toxicity relationships of such novel, structurally diverse compounds must be thoroughly elucidated before further development. Here, we present the aroylhydrazone compounds ( and ) regarding their: (i) acute and subacute toxicity in mice; (ii) redox-modulating in vivo and in vitro capacity; (iii) pathomorphology in the liver, kidney, and small intestine tissue specimens; and (iv) intestinal permeability.

Micellar Curcumin Substantially Increases the Antineoplastic Activity of the Alkylphosphocholine Erufosine against TWIST1 Positive Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma Cell Lines.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare form of cancer with local as well as systemic manifestations. Concomitant bacterial infections increase morbidity and mortality rates due to impaired skin barrier and immune deficiency. In the current study, we demonstrated that the in vitro anti-lymphoma potential of erufosine is diminished by TWIST1 expression and micellar curcumin substantially increases its antineoplastic activity.

In Vitro Antineoplastic and Antiviral Activity and In Vivo Toxicity of L. Extracts.

This study evaluated the in vitro antineoplastic and antiviral potential and in vivo toxicity of twelve extracts with different polarity obtained from the herbaceous perennial plant L. (). In vitro cytotoxicity was determined by ISO 10993-5/2009 on bladder cancer, (T-24 and BC-3C), liver carcinoma (HEP-G2) and normal embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cell lines.

Hypepontine, a new quaternary alkaloid with antimicrobial properties.

New isoquinoline alkaloid hypepontine () together with a five known compounds, were identified in Velen, the partial synonym of L. The structure of the new substance was elucidated based on spectroscopic evidence. The tertiary and quaternary alkaloid mixtures as well as the isolated alkaloids were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activity.

A Patient with Multiple Keratinocytic Cancers (MKC): Uncommon Presentation in a Bulgarian Patient.

Keratinocyte skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), are the most common cancer occurring in people with fair skin, worldwide. Despite all known triggers, several suggested contributors are still investigated. We will focus our attention on the personal history of previous cancers and radiation exposure as occupational risk factors, as in the presented case.

Subungual Squamous Cell Carcinoma Associated with Long Standing Onychomycosis: Aggressive Surgical Approach with a Favourable Outcome.

Background: Tumours of the nail bed are rare. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent among them. Chronic infection, chemical or physical trauma/microtrauma, genetic disorders such as congenital ectodermal dysplasia, radiation, tar, arsenic or exposure to minerals, sun exposure, immunosuppression, and previous HPV infection have all been discussed as etiologic factors.

Anti-enteroviral triple combination of viral replication inhibitors: activity against coxsackievirus B1 neuroinfection in mice.

Background: Chemotherapy is an important tool for controlling enterovirus infections, but clinically effective anti-enterovirus drugs do not currently exist, mainly due to the development of drug resistance. We investigated the combination effects of enterovirus replication inhibitors in order to limit this process. In vitro and in vivo toxicity evaluation of cationic PDMAEMA-PCL-PDMAEMA micelles as a carrier of curcumin.

Polymeric micelles have attracted significant attention because of their potential application as promising drug-delivery systems. In the present study cationic micelles, based on triblock copolymer poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) - poly(e-caprolactone) - poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) were prepared and loaded with curcumin. In vitro cytotoxicity of empty and curcumin loaded polymer micelles was investigated on two cell culture models, human hepatoma cell line HEP G2 and freshly isolated rat hepatocytes, following their viability and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage.

Comparative Study of Alkaloid Pattern of Four Bulgarian Fumaria species.

The alkaloid pattern of four Fumaria species (Fumaria kralikii, Fumaria rostellata, Fumaria schleicherii, Fumaria thureii) growing in Bulgaria was investigated by GC-MS and twenty isoquinoline alkaloids were determined. Phytochemical investigation of the alkaloid composition on Fumaria thuretii Boiss was made for the first time. The alkaloid profile of the species was compared at two levels, between different species and within two species from different habitats.

NEVUS FLAMMEUS ASSOCIATED WITH DYSPLASTIC NEVI AND LICHEN SCLEROSUS: THE FIRST REPORT IN THE MEDICAL LITERATURE.

We describe a rare case of a 28 year-old male patient presenting with pruritus and increased sensitivity of the prepuce accompanied by erythematous confluent papules, unilateral nevus flammeus (NF) along almost the whole length of the right lower limb and two dysplastic nevi (DN), one located on the mid back and the other on the medial border of the right fifth toe, the latter coinciding with the NF. A biopsy of the prepuce revealed lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). Mental health assessment revealed anxiety disorder and predisposition to panic attacks.

In the present study, PI4KB was identified as the direct target of the plant-derived anti-picornavirus compounds, oxoglaucine and pachypodol (also known as Ro 09-0179). PI4KB was also identified as the target via which pachypodol interferes with brefeldin A (BFA)-induced Golgi disassembly in non-infected cells.

[Dermatofibromyxoma of the inguinal fold mimicking accessory mammilla: surgical approach].

Dermatofibromyxoma is a rare benign tumor which most often surgically removed and requires consideration of a number of differential diagnoses, in order to confirm its histogenesis. We present a rare case of a female patient with tumour formation in the inguinal region, with clinical manifestation and characteristics similar to those of accessory mammilla, which was surgically excised and histologically established as dermatofibromyxoma.

Macrophages and dendritic cells in the development of liver injury leading to liver failure.

Liver failure (LF) continues to be a serious problem due to different underlying disorders. Not only hepatocytes but Kupffer cells (KCs) and dendritic cells (DCs) are of importance in this instance. We wanted to investigate the possible role of KCs and liver DCs in the development of liver injury in patients with liver failure.

Wrong melanoma thickness measurement: check it or leave it?

Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, accounting for about 90% of deaths from cutaneous neoplasms, and its incidence has increased significantly in recent years. According to the 2012 European criteria for diagnosis and treatment of malignant melanoma, diagnosis should be based on the combination of clinical features, dermoscopic data and histological examination, preferably after excisional biopsy. Tumour thickness and other parameters for local staging according to the AJCC classification should be included in the pathology report.

Angiomyolipoma of the helix without signs of systemic involvement: successful surgical approach.

Cutaneous angiomyolipoma (AMP) of the ear is an extremely rare benign mesenchymal tumour. Angiomyolipomas are the most common benign tumour of the kidney and could be associated in 20% of the cases with the tuberous sclerosis complex (TBC), in which condition, most of the patients have several angiomyolipomas affecting both of the kidneys. We report the rare case of a 66-year-old female who had an asymptomatic, solitary, nodule on the helix of the right ear for several years, which was histologically assessed as angiomyolipoma.

Leptopyrine, new alkaloid from Leptopyrum fumarioides L. (Ranunculaceae).

A new type of isoquinoline alkaloid leptopyrine was isolated from the aerial parts of Leptopyrum fumarioides L. (Ranunculaceae) of Mongolian origin. The known alkaloids protopine and thalifoline were isolated for the first time from this the species.
