There are several antimicrobial options for treating urinary tract infections in children. Although cefdinir is commonly used, better options exist. We developed an intervention bundle to reduce the use of cefdinir in favor of cephalexin.

Risk factors for treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria in a rural health system.

Purpose: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is often inappropriately treated, leading to antimicrobial-related adverse events and contributing to antimicrobial resistance. This study examined the asymptomatic bacteriuria treatment rate at a rural Wisconsin health system and the patient-specific factors that may be influencing clinicians' decisions to treat.

Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive report of patients admitted from January to May 2022 at 7 rural Wisconsin hospitals.

Fenretinide inhibits obesity and fatty liver disease but induces Smpd3 to increase serum ceramides and worsen atherosclerosis in LDLR mice.

Fenretinide is a synthetic retinoid that can prevent obesity and improve insulin sensitivity in mice by directly altering retinol/retinoic acid homeostasis and inhibiting excess ceramide biosynthesis. We determined the effects of Fenretinide on LDLR mice fed high-fat/high-cholesterol diet ± Fenretinide, a model of atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Fenretinide prevented obesity, improved insulin sensitivity and completely inhibited hepatic triglyceride accumulation, ballooning and steatosis.

However, due to the difficulties working in high-elevation mountain systems, the impacts of these drivers on alpine breeding species have rarely been investigated. The Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) is a migratory wader, which has been the subject of uniquely long-term and spatially widespread monitoring effort in Scotland, where it breeds in alpine areas in dwindling numbers.

We hypothesised that mtDNA is released during active disease, serving as a key pro-inflammatory factor in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The basic mechanisms of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production suggest they select inactive synapses for pruning: whether they do so is unknown. Ranging behaviour and habitat preferences of the Martial Eagle: Implications for the conservation of a declining apex predator.

Understanding the ranging behaviours of species can be helpful in effective conservation planning. However, for many species that are rare, occur at low densities, or occupy challenging environments, this information is often lacking. The Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) is a low density apex predator declining in both non-protected and protected areas in southern Africa, and little is known about its ranging behaviour.

Background: Dispersal comprises three broad stages - departure from the natal or breeding locations, subsequent travel, and settlement. These stages are difficult to measure, and vary considerably between sexes, age classes, individuals and geographically. We used tracking data from 24 golden eagles, fitted with long-lived GPS satellite transmitters as nestlings, which we followed during their first year.

Metabolic fingerprinting of Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice urine with capillary electrophoresis.

Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice has been fingerprinted using CE to study the capabilities of this technique as a diagnostic tool for this parasitic disease. Two modes of separation were used in generating the electrophoretic data, with each untreated urine sample the following methods were applied: (i) a fused-silica capillary, operating with an applied potential of 18 kV, in micellar EKC (MEKC) and (ii) a polyacrylamide-coated capillary, operating with an applied potential of -20 kV under zonal CZE conditions. By combining normal and reverse polarities in the data treatment we have extracted more information from the samples, which is a better approach for CE metabolomics.

Plasma lipids are altered in Gaucher disease: biochemical markers to evaluate therapeutic intervention.

Enzyme replacement therapy has been in clinical practice for the non-neuronopathic form of Gaucher disease for 15 years. However, the wide phenotypic variability in this disorder poses challenges to clinicians to assess patient severity and disease progression in order to effectively manage patients. Once therapy is initiated, methods to monitor the complex biochemical changes associated with the disease, and the response of these changes to therapy, are required in order to tailor therapy regimens to individual patients.

Synthesis and anthelmintic properties of arylquinolines with activity against drug-resistant nematodes.

2,4-Disubstituted quinolines with additional substituents in positions 5-8 have been found to have anthelmintic properties. A number of 2,4-dimethoxy-6- or 8-arylquinolines have potent activity against the sheep nematode Haemonchus contortus, with LD99 values of the same order of magnitude as levamisole. These arylquinolines maintain their activity against levamisole-, ivermectin- and thiabendazole-resistant strains of H.

Plumage variability, status signalling and individual recognition in avian flocks.

A decade ago it was suggested that much of the plumage variability exhibited by flocking birds can be explained by 'status signalling', plumage variability being used to signal agonistic status(1). As a result of this suggestion, a number of studies have examined the social significance of plumage differences, but the status signalling hypothesis has not received unequivocal support. Other factors, such as the facilitation of individual recognition, also appear to be important in explaining plumage variability.
