Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of reference intervals (RIs) in clinical decision-making while accounting for analytical biases in Dutch laboratories for three different measurements: creatinine, hemoglobin, and ferritin.
  • Data was collected from quality assessments and reported RIs, which were compared to harmonized RIs to evaluate their consistency with analytical bias.
  • Results indicated a lack of consistency in routinely used RIs and their analytical bias, highlighting that adopting harmonized RIs could improve inter-laboratory decision-making and reduce misinterpretations in patient diagnoses.

Background: Given the excellent performance of modern mass spectrometers, their clinical application for the analysis of macromolecules is a growing field of interest. This principle is explored by hemoglobin analysis, which is a representative example by its molecular weight and clinical relevance in e.g.

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder accounting for about 2% of all leukemias. The clinical course is indolent, however HCL patients are particularly susceptible to infections. Here we report two cases of Q-fever as first manifestation of disease in two patients affected by HCL.

Background: The principle of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) as assessed by TEST 1 is different from that of Westergren-based methods. This could result in different influences on the tests by paraproteins.

Methods: We investigated the effect of paraproteins on ESR readings by TEST 1 (y) and the StarrSed (x), a Westergren-based method, in 142 patients with paraproteinaemia.

Steroid cell tumours not otherwise specified are rare ovarian tumours, which can cause foetal and maternal virilisation. This is the first case report that describes a steroid cell tumour not otherwise specified during pregnancy. Differential diagnosis, a diagnostic work-up and treatment are discussed.
