Acute bilateral parotid swelling upon laryngeal mask airway insertion: A case report.

We describe a case of bilateral parotid swelling developing shortly after laryngeal mask airway insertion. Spontaneous resolution occurred within 12 h postoperatively This unusual phenomenon has been termed 'anaesthesia mumps' or 'acute sialadenosis'. Its exact relationship to anaesthesia remains unknown.

Haemorrhagic complications following cataract and vitreoretinal surgery with sub-Tenon's block in patients receiving non-vitamin K oral anticoagulant agents: A prospective audit.

There is a lack of data to support either continuation or interruption of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants for cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. A prospective audit was undertaken of 291 patients undergoing cataract surgery or vitreoretinal surgery, predominantly under sub-Tenon's block, while continuing these agents. The median time from last non-vitamin K oral anticoagulant dose to the insertion of sub-Tenon's block was five hours.

Sub-Tenon anesthesia: a prospective study of 6,000 blocks.

Background: An initial pilot study of 300 sub-Tenon local anesthetic blocks (STBs) for intraocular surgery established the effectiveness and patient acceptability of the technique. Following this, a decision was made in 1995 to change from sharp needle techniques to STB for all eye surgeries performed during local anesthesia at Auckland Hospital (Auckland, New Zealand) by reeducation of anesthetists and surgeons. At this point, sufficient data were not available to confirm that STB would avoid the complications associated with the passage of sharp needles into the orbit or would cause a different set of serious complications.
