Background: After the emergence of COVID-19, a one-month strict lockdown was imposed in April 2020 in Vietnam, followed by lighter social distancing restrictions over the year. We investigated whether those measures affected people who inject drugs (PWID) in terms of risk behaviors for HIV and HCV and access to prevention and care in the city of Haiphong, a historic hotspot for HIV and drug use.

Trichinellosis and cysticercosis remain challenges to human health and animal productivity worldwide, especially in developing countries. While information on the occurrence of both diseases is infrequent, they are endemic in parts of Vietnam and mainly related to indigenous pigs kept by ethnic minorities. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of both diseases in indigenous pigs and explore the perception and awareness of both human and pig trichinellosis and cysticercosis of pig farmers.

Biomimetic hydrogels which possess good biocompatibility, high degradability, and low toxicity as well as good antibacterial activity against various bacteria would potentially be promising for biomaterial applications, such as wound healing, tissue engineering, and payload delivery systems. Herein, we report the synthesis and hydrogelation of L-Dopa conjugated (GPLD) polypeptides via a versatile strategy including enzymatic cross-linking or coordinated/oxidized cross-linking with Fe ions and demonstrated the feasibility of loading cancer drug and metal NPs in hydrogel matrix. The drug-loaded hydrogel was simply prepared via coordinated/oxidized cross-linking by Fe and HO within short gelation time.

Hydrogels containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were recently found to exhibit excellent antibacterial properties against both gram-negative/positive bacteria and fungi. In this study, we reported the synthesis of AgNPs-contained gelatin-polyethylene glycol-dopamine (AgNP-GPD) hydrogels via the in situ formation of AgNPs in GPD polypeptide solution, followed by an enzymatic cross-linking reaction to form hydrogels. The experimental results showed that the reducing reaction exerted by GPD polypeptides under physiological conditions can afford the formation of AgNPs in situ in the polypeptide solution without the need for additional reducing agents and/or processes such as UV or thermal treatments and then the hydrogelation of GPD polypeptide solution containing AgNPs were preceeded via enzymatic cross-linking reaction.

A framework was developed to characterize the antimicrobial use/antimicrobial resistance complex in livestock systems in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Farm profitability, disease prevention, and mortality rate reduction were identified as drivers toward antimicrobial use in livestock systems. It revealed that antimicrobial use was high in all sectors studied, and that routine preventative use was of particular importance to broiler production systems.

To determine the prevalence of indicator bacteria resistant to antimicrobials among poultry in three Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand), we examined the antimicrobial susceptibilities of commensal bacteria isolated from chickens. In total, 125, 117 and 180 isolates of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, respectively, were used to test for antimicrobial susceptibility. Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial treatment was most frequently observed with oxytetracycline with a prevalence of 73.

Biogas digesters are widely promoted and increasingly used to treat and generate gas from pig slurry worldwide. The objective of this study was to describe manure management practices with focus on biogas digestion among small scale pig farmers in Hue (50 farmers) and Hanoi (96 farmers) and to assess fecal contamination levels in biogas effluent. Results showed that 84% of the farmers in Hanoi and 42% in Hue used both pig slurry and human excreta for biogas production.

For the purpose of reconstructive surgery training and research, we have developed a new skin flap model: canine lateral thoracic fasciocutaneous flap. Anatomical study found that the lateral thoracic arteries in dogs have similar anatomical characteristics to human's ones. Based on these vessels, if a skin flap was designed within the vessels territory (size 5 x 8 cm) it could survive completely, whereas, if designed beyond the vessels territory (size 5 x 14 cm) would result in partial necrosis of the flap.
