Switch from BAK-preserved to preservative-free latanoprost decreases anterior chamber flare in POAG patients.

Purpose: To validate the hypothesis that BAK induces low-grade inflammation in the anterior chamber, we designed a study to investigate whether switching from BAK-preserved to preservative-free latanoprost in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) would reduce the flare levels.

Patients: Forty-one eyes of twenty-two patients with primary open-angle glaucoma treated with BAK-preserved latanoprost for at least 6 months as monotherapy were included. Exclusion criteria included any use of topical eye drops other than latanoprost, pseudoexfoliation and pigment dispersion glaucoma, wearing of contact lenses and intraocular surgery in the past year.

Iatrogenic ocular vascular occlusions: case reports.

Report of two patients with severe loss of visual acuity after surgery in the head and neck area. Ophthalmic examination and imaging studies demonstrate an occlusion of the ophthalmic and central retinal arteries. In both cases, the underlying physiopathology is the embolisation by an intra-operatively injected substance.

Myopia: more than a refractive error--LASIK and retinal dystrophies.

Three patients who had undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) correction for myopia were first seen because of suboptimal visual acuity (VA) and night blindness and/or photophobia. After a comprehensive examination including psychophysical and electrophysiological tests, two of the three patients were shown to suffer from a progressive conerod dystrophy. The third patient had retinitis pigmentosa.

Delay in diagnosis and outcome of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of Acanthamoeba keratitis with respect to the delay in diagnosis.

Methods: A retrospective review of the records of 14 patients treated for Acanthamoeba keratitis was carried out. Delay in diagnosis was correlated with risk factors, clinical presentation, method of diagnosis, final visual acuity and need for penetrating keratoplasty.

Results of penetrating keratoplasty in syphilitic interstitial keratitis.

Purpose: To compare the results in our patient series after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) for syphilitic interstitial keratitis (IK) with those described in the literature.

Methods: Retrospective case series in which visual acuity (VA), graft clarity, rejection episodes, intraocular pressure and endothelial cell density (ECD) were examined postoperatively.

Results: Postoperative VA improved in all cases.

Alport syndrome and conjunctival telangiectasia.

We report a patient with ocular abnormalities due to Alport syndrome. Considerable improvement of visual acuity was obtained following ocular lens extraction with foldable lens implantation in the right eye to compensate the effect of the lenticonus anterior. The presence of conjunctival telangiectasia is a new clinical finding in a patient with Alport syndrome.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) in patients with stellate neuroretinitis: 3 cases.

This case series describes three patients with a similar clinical picture: unilateral abrupt visual loss, optic nerve edema, and a macular star exudate. In all cases we found significant antibody titers to Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of cat scratch disease. Cat scratch disease seems to be the most common cause of stellate neuroretinitis, formerly known as Leber's idiopathic stellate retinopathy.
