Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are non differentiated sarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract and have for a long time been confused with well differentiated tumors and classified as leiomyosarcoma. These tumors are characterized immunohistochemically by CD 117 staining. This marker represents the expression of c-kit which is a receptor for growth factor with enzymatic activity (tyrosine kinase).
