Whereas molybdenum dinitrogen complexes have played a major role as catalytic model systems of nitrogenase, corresponding tungsten complexes were in most cases found to be catalytically inactive. Herein, we present a modified pentadentate tetrapodal (pentaPod) phosphine ligand in which two dimethylphosphine groups of the pentaPod (P5) ligand have been replaced with phospholanes (Pln). The derived molybdenum complex [Mo(N)P5] generates 22 and the analogous tungsten complex [W(N)P5] 7 equivalents of NH from N in the presence of 180 equivalents of SmI(THF)/HO, rendering the latter the first tungsten complex chemocatalytically converting N to NH.

Today, there is a strong awareness of the need to train medical and healthcare teams in interprofessional collaborative practice to learn how to work as a team, reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. Simulation is a recognized and effective pedagogical modality for achieving these objectives.

Hepatitis C virus NS3-4A protease regulates the lipid environment for RNA replication by cleaving host enzyme 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase.

Many RNA viruses create specialized membranes for genome replication by manipulating host lipid metabolism and trafficking, but in most cases, we do not know the molecular mechanisms responsible or how specific lipids may impact the associated membrane and viral process. For example, hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes a specific, large-fold increase in the steady-state abundance of intracellular desmosterol, an immediate precursor of cholesterol, resulting in increased fluidity of the membrane where HCV RNA replication occurs. Here, we establish the mechanism responsible for HCV's effect on intracellular desmosterol, whereby the HCV NS3-4A protease controls activity of 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24), the enzyme that catalyzes conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol.

Effective decrease of photoelectric emission threshold from gold plated surfaces.

Many applications require charge neutralization of isolated test bodies, and this has been successfully done using photoelectric emission from surfaces which are electrically benign (gold) or superconducting (niobium). Gold surfaces nominally have a high work function (∼5.1 eV) which should require deep UV photons for photoemission.

Identification of small molecule inhibitors targeting the Zika virus envelope protein.

The recent emergence of Zika virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus, in the Americas has shed light on the severe neurological diseases associated with infection, notably congenital microcephaly in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. Despite the recent focus on Zika virus, there are currently no approved vaccines or antiviral therapies available to treat or prevent infection. In this study we established a competitive amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay (ALPHAscreen) to identify small molecule inhibitors targeting the envelope protein of Zika virus (Zika E).

The spread of antimicrobial resistance stimulates discovery strategies that place emphasis on mechanisms circumventing the drawbacks of traditional antibiotics and on agents that hit multiple targets. Host defense peptides (HDPs) are promising candidates in this regard. Here we demonstrate that a given HDP sequence intrinsically encodes for tuneable mechanisms of membrane disruption.

Background: General practice is currently central to National Health Service reform, producing favourable conditions for the practice nurse role to be further strengthened and developed. However, the literature has continued to describe evidence that practice nurses are a disempowered, isolated group with many constraints reducing their ability to respond to opportunities to develop their role.

¹³C- and ¹H-detection under fast MAS for the study of poorly available proteins: application to sub-milligram quantities of a 7 trans-membrane protein.

We demonstrate that (13)C-detected spectra recorded using fast (60 kHz) magic angle spinning on sub-milligram (<10 μmol) quantities of a protonated 7 trans-membrane helix protein (bacteriorhodopsin) in its native lipid environment are comparable in sensitivity and resolution to those recorded using 15-fold larger sample volumes with conventional solid state NMR methodology. We demonstrate the utility of proton-detected measurements which yield narrow (1)H linewidths under these conditions, and that no structural alterations are observed. We propose that these methods will prove useful to gain structural information on membrane proteins with poor availability, which can be studied in their native lipid environments.

Amine-boranes: green hypergolic fuels with consistently low ignition delays.

Complexation of amines with borane converts them to hypergols or decreases their ignition delays (IDs) multifold (with white fuming nitric acid as the oxidant). With consistently low IDs, amine-boranes represent a class of compounds that can be promising alternatives to toxic hydrazine and its derivatives as propellants. A structure-hypergolicity relationship study reveals the necessary features for the low ID.

Background: Weight loss surgery (WLS) is the most successful intervention available for the treatment of morbid obesity, and LAGB is among the most commonly used procedures in bariatric surgery. So far, the patient experience of deciding to undergo LAGB has been explored rarely and predominantly retrospectively.

Adherence therapy improves medication adherence and quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Many factors are associated with medication non-adherence in Parkinson's disease (PD), including complex treatment regimens, mood disorders and impaired cognition.
