The causes for recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) remain unknown in a large proportion of the cases. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G and HLA-E are expressed on invasive trophoblast cells, and are supposed to confer to materno-fetal tolerance. A total of 14 different nucleotide sequences have been described for HLA-G, including one dysfunctional null allele (HLA-G*0105N), while five different sequences have been described for HLA-E.

A new real-time dose calculation and visualization was developed as part of the new 3D treatment planning tool OCTOPUS for proton therapy of ocular tumours within a national research project together with the Hahn-Meitner Institut Berlin. The implementation resolves the common separation between parameter definition, dose calculation and evaluation and allows a direct examination of the expected dose distribution while adjusting the treatment parameters. The new tool allows the therapist to move the desired dose distribution under visual control in 3D to the appropriate place.

GIN AUSTRIA (Gesundheitsinformationsnetz AUSTRIA) offers patients and consumers reliable medical knowledge about diseases, wellness and disease management in an easy understandable way and enables them to quick and incessant access to informations about the Austrian health system and Austrian health organizations. To achieve full customer (patients, citizens) satisfaction to find relevant information we propose a concept of a vector-model oriented IR-Tool based on the controlled vocabulary of the MeSH Thesaurus (german version). By this approach users who are often not used to scientific terms and expressions are supported to build up their own query with MeSH Main Headings.

In this study we investigated whether there are allele-specific differences in expression of sHLA-G molecules. For this, the sHLA-G plasma concentrations of 94 healthy unrelated individuals were measured by ELISA and correlated to their HLA-G genotypes, as determined by sequence analysis of exon 2 and 3 of the HLA-G gene.

Materials And Methods: Perfusion data in 11 patients with cT3 (clinical staging, tumor invaded the perirectal tissue) rectal carcinoma who underwent preoperative chemoirradiation were analyzed. Perfusion data were acquired by using a T1 mapping sequence with a whole-body magnetic resonance (MR) imager.
Clinical observations suggest that flecainide might pass the placenta more easily than digoxin, and that its transfer is less disturbed in case of hydrops fetalis than that of digoxin. The purpose of the study was to compare the materno-fetal transplacental transfer of digoxin, flecainide, and amiodarone, another antiarrhythmic agent used in the treatment of fetal tachyarrhythmia, and to assess the effect of an elevated umbilical venous pressure (UVP) on the transfer rate. Isolated lobules of 16 human placentas were dually perfused after spontaneous delivery or caesarean section.

Methods: After implantation of 13 different IOLs (polymethylmethacrylate, silicone acrygel) into the artificial bag, the induced capsular bag deformation was measured and analyzed. The posterior space between IOL and capsule was examined by ultrasonographic biomicroscopy.
Blood pressure control in many hypertensive patients remains imperfect, also because routine office blood pressure can only give limited information about diurnal variations and nocturnal dipping. It was the aim of our evaluation to study the efficacy of antihypertensive therapy and the correlation between repeated office blood pressure values and 24-hour ambulatory measurements in hypertensive outdoor patients treated by life-style modification and antihypertensive medication. Clinical data and blood pressure values in 343 outdoor patients who were admitted to the medical centre for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in hypertension were evaluated.

HLA-G interacts with NK cells, can present nonamer peptides and binds CD8 in an analogous manner to classical HLA-I. The HLA-G protein exists in soluble and membrane-bound isoforms generated through alternative splicing.

Soluble HLA (sHLA) molecules increase during episodes of allograft rejection and are discussed as candidates to modulate immune responses. We questioned whether after in vitro fertilization (IVF) the subsequent intact pregnancy, early abortion, or tubal pregnancy influence the courses sHLA serum levels.

The complexes are not randomly distributed within the inner mitochondrial membrane, but assemble into supramolecular structures. We show that all cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is bound to cytochrome c reductase (complex III), which exists in three forms: the free dimer, and two supercomplexes comprising an additional one or two complex IV monomers.

Background: Even though invasive intrauterine techniques for the treatment of TTTS such as punction of amniotic fluid and laser coagulation of placental vascular anastomoses are established methods in specialized centers, invasive methods are not always sufficiently successful. In conservative treatment of TTTS oral or intravenous maternal digoxin therapy in order to improve fetal cardiac insufficiency in combination with or after failure of invasive techniques is an useful method.
Patients And Methods: We investigated 12 TTTS pregnancies and 4 singleton pregnancies, which had been treated by maternal digoxin treatment for TTTS or arrhythmias, respectively.
In a prospective study of 38 cadavers of patients older than 18 without previous chest injury or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), active compression-decompression (ACD) resuscitation manoeuvres were performed to determine possible factors influencing sternal and/or rib fractures. ACD was performed for 60 s, with compression and decompression forces being continuously recorded. A stepwise logistic regression analysis was applied.

As routine parameters (leukocytes, C-reactive protein (CRP), fever, and fetal tachycardia) lack satisfactory sensitivity and specificity, this study evaluates whether the determination of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8) or soluble interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) in maternal serum could supplement or replace routine inflammation parameters.
Methods: In this prospective study results of clinical and laboratory parameters were investigated with respect to neonatal infection in 71 patients with PROM.
Study Objectives: To investigate the geographical distribution of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) and morbidity for coronary heart disease, angina pectoris and myocardial infarction by spatial analysis of the standardized morbidity rates (SMR) on district level. To identify clusters by Moran's I Statistic and the Regional Spatial Autocorrelation Coefficient (RSAC) of Munasinghe and Morris. To investigate demand factor morbidity and supply factor health care infrastructure on the district level as reasons for geographical disparity.

> Objective: For more than 20 years, vibroacoustic stimulation testing (VAST) using an artificial larynx has been used worldwide when fetal heart rate monitoring produced patterns with absent or very low variability. In addition to the artificial larynx many other appliances have been used to stimulate a seemingly dormant fetus, but these have rarely been evaluated properly. In this study we tried to evaluate the use of standard mechanical wind-up alarm clocks for VAST.
