Commutability is where the measurement response for a reference material (RM) is the same as for an individual patient sample with the same concentration of analyte measured using two or more measurement systems. Assessment of commutability is essential when the RM is used in a calibration hierarchy or to ensure that clinical measurements are comparable across different measurement procedures and at different times. The commutability of three new Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) for determining serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], defined as the sum of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], was assessed through an interlaboratory study.

  • Hemoglobin and hematocrit are common tests to identify anemia, but their results can differ significantly, particularly in children and pregnant individuals.
  • The study analyzed data from 7,052 children and 1,437 pregnant persons, revealing that anemia estimates based on hemoglobin and hematocrit varied, with a notable percentage detected by only one test.
  • The findings suggest that using these biomarkers interchangeably could lead to underdiagnosis and lack of treatment for anemia, emphasizing the need for accurate assessments in clinical practice.

Introduction: Based on clinical practice guidelines, the application of corticosteroids as a first-line therapy is common. Although sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) etiology is primarily idiopathic, hearing loss can result from a perilymphatic fistula (PLF). Recent findings show evidence of a specific rate of PLF based on a cochlin-tomoprotein (CTP) detection test.

Different ligands stabilize specific conformations of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) that direct distinct signaling cascades mediated by heterotrimeric G proteins or β-arrestin. These different active conformations are thought to engage distinct intracellular transducers because of differential phosphorylation patterns in the receptor C-terminal tail (the "barcode" hypothesis). Here, we identified the AT1R barcodes for the endogenous agonist AngII, which stimulates both G protein activation and β-arrestin recruitment, and for a synthetic biased agonist that only stimulates β-arrestin recruitment.

Background: Undergraduates' workplace learning is an important part of health sciences education. Educational psychology research considers many different aspects of self-regulated learning at the workplace, including cognition, motivation, emotions, and context. Multivariate longitudinal and diary studies in this field require fewer items than alternatives or even a single item per construct and can reveal the sub-processes of workplace learning and contribute to a better understanding of students' learning.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cochlin tomoprotein testing (CTP), MRI findings, and hearing balance functions in patients experiencing sudden hearing loss.
  • Eight patients with sudden hearing loss and possible vertigo or tinnitus were examined using CTP testing through middle ear samples and various MRI techniques.
  • Results showed that while all patients exhibited non-specific contrast enhancement in the affected ear on MRI, only some had positive CTP tests indicating a potential perilymphatic fistula, but no MRI signals specifically indicated this condition.

: In most cases, intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS) occurs in patients with unilateral hearing deterioration or neurofibromatosis type II (NF II). The pattern of localization of these tumors varies but mostly affects the cochlea. Extirpation of the cochlear schwannoma, if hidden by the cochlea modiolus, is difficult under the aspect of complete removal.

A factor constraining the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies is limited information on the size and spatial distribution of free-roaming dog populations (FRDPs). The aim of this study was to develop a statistical model to predict the size of free-roaming dog populations and the spatial distribution of free-roaming dogs in urban areas of Nepal, based on real-world dog census data from the Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust (HART) and Animal Nepal. Candidate explanatory variables included proximity to roads, building density, specific building types, human population density and normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI).

Objective: Develop and implement a system in the Veterans Health Administration (VA) to alert local medical center personnel in real time when an acute- or long-term care patient/resident is admitted to their facility with a history of colonization or infection with a multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) previously identified at any VA facility across the nation.

Methods: An algorithm was developed to extract clinical microbiology and local facility census data from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse initially targeting carbapenem-resistant (CRE) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA). The algorithm was validated with chart review of CRE cases from 2010-2018, trialed and refined in 24 VA healthcare systems over two years, expanded to other MDROs and implemented nationwide on 4/2022 as "VA Bug Alert" (VABA).

Tunnel junctions comprising self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) from liquid crystal-inspired molecules show a pronounced hysteretic current-voltage response, due to electric field-driven dipole reorientation in the SAM. This renders these junctions attractive device candidates for emerging technologies such as in-memory and neuromorphic computing. Here, the novel molecular design, device fabrication, and characterization of such resistive switching devices with a largely improved performance, compared to the previously published work are reported.

Maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) is a term utilized in mammals to describe pathways in which the conceptus alters the endometrial environment to prevent regression of corpora lutea to ensure continued production of progesterone (P4) required for establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. For nearly 40 years after publication of the endocrine/exocrine theory, conceptus estrogen (E2) was considered the primary maternal recognition signal in the pig. Conceptus production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was also considered to be a major factor in preventing luteolysis.

The human brain can encode auditory regularities with fixed sound-to-sound intervals and with sound onsets locked to cardiac inputs. Here, we investigated auditory and cardio-audio regularity encoding during sleep, when bodily and environmental stimulus processing may be altered. Using electroencephalography and electrocardiography in healthy volunteers (N = 26) during wakefulness and sleep, we measured the response to unexpected sound omissions within three regularity conditions: synchronous, where sound and heartbeat are temporally coupled, isochronous, with fixed sound-to-sound intervals, and a control condition without regularity.
