In the article, we analyze a theoretical approach to the organization of the life of older people, which is called «aging-in-place» (in the English literature). In recent years, this approach, developed in the UK and positively received in Western Europe, has attracted some interest among Russian researchers as well. The purpose of the article is to show the connection of «aging-in-place» with other theoretical approaches, namely community care, deinstitutionalization of services and care for the older persons, and especially with the social exclusion of the elder.

In total, during the study period, candidemia was microbiologically proven by blood culture in 81 patients (duplicates were excluded). Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) accounted for 35,8%.

There is speculation that bacteria can influence the pathogenesis of cancer. A comparative assessment of the content of four anaerobic periodontogens (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythensis, Treponema denticola) in the tumor tissue and in the healthy tissue of the oral mucosa of patients with oropharyngeal cancer was carried out.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInappropriate use and overuse of antibiotics are among the most important factors in resistance development, and effective antibiotic stewardship measures are needed to optimize outcomes. Selection of appropriate antimicrobials relies on accurate and timely antimicrobial susceptibility testing. However, the availability of clinical breakpoints and in vitro susceptibility testing often lags behind regulatory approval by several years for new antimicrobials.

Objectives of our study were to determine the prevalence of syphilis and gonorrhea in the screened occupational groups in Moscow and to conduct a cost-effectiveness evaluation of the occupational screening program.
Study Design: Serum samples from 4 main occupational groups (food handlers and other food industry workers, market salespersons, education and health care providers, and hotel and other public utility workers) were tested for syphilis and gonorrhea.
The most important problem of onkology, i. e. antibiotic prophylaxis and treatment of postoperative infectious complications is touched upon in the paper.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFrequency of postoperation complications at oncological patients deviates in the range from 10 to 70 per cent. The highest frequency of infectious complications is registered after extended and complex operations (cervical carcinoma, cancer of vulva, ovarian cancer). The most frequent aerobic pathogens in oncology are enterococci, staphylococci and streptococci, in the case of urinary tract operations--enterococci and Erscherichia coli.

A great risk for postoperative infections is particularly high after Wertheim's operation. This study evaluated the efficiency of infection prevention in 19 cancer gynecological patients by using the antibiotic augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid).

At present 10 to 30 per cent of the microbial strains from cancer patients are problem ones: oxacillin resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase negative strains of Staphylococcus spp., aminoglycoside resistant strains of Escherichia coli, 3rd generation cephalosporin resistant strains of Klebsiella spp. and fungi of Candida which requires development of more rational approaches to antibacterial chemotherapy and prophylaxis of infectious complications.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFungal infection in oncologic hospitals is a serious threat for the patients that can undermine the results of the specific treatment of the main disease. Most frequently fungal infection is developing in localities naturally disseminated with microbial flora. The infection is usually mixed: bacterial/fungal and even fungal/fungal.

Fifty females with vaginitis due to Candida albicans were treated with fluconazol (diflucan) in a single dose of 150 mg administered per os. A complete elimination of the clinical signs in 42 out of 50 patients (84 per cent) and a significant improvement of the clinical picture in 4 out of 50 patients (8 per cent) were recorded. The cultures of the smears produced no fungal growth with respect to 31 out of 36 patients (86.
