[Indium 111-labeled antibodies in the detection of colorectal carcinoma].

The aim of the study is detection of the recurrences and metastases of colorectal carcinomas using (111)In labelled antibodies B72.3 in 14 patients. With tomography, we can access better distinction of tumour in comparison to other structures and estimation of its size.

Effect of cold exposure on serum DBH and interscapular brown adipose tissue MAO activity in hypothyroid T3- and T4-treated rats.

As the indicators of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function, the activity of serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) and interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) monoamine oxidase (MAO) were examined in rats that were chemically thyroidectomized (TX), treated with thyroid hormones, and exposed to cold (4 degrees C). In TX animals, body temperature (bt) significantly decreased, and relative IBAT mass increased as compared with control, euthyroid animals, independent of the ambient temperature. The bt fall in TX cold-exposed animals was more severe, provoking hypothermia after 4 h.

Concentration of plant viruses using monolithic chromatographic supports.

A new chromatographic medium, Convective Interaction Media(CIM) disk monolithic columns, was applied to plant virus concentration. The ability of the columns to concentrate highly diluted plant viruses was tested on a model plant virus, rod-shaped tomato mosaic virus (ToMV). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the quantitative analysis.

Noradrenaline stimulates brown pre-adipocyte proliferation and brown adipocyte differentiation. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the influence of noradrenaline on PPARgamma gene expression in brown adipocytes.

alpha(v)beta(3) Integrin interacts with the transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) type II receptor to potentiate the proliferative effects of TGFbeta1 in living human lung fibroblasts.

The alpha(v)beta(3) integrin is known to cooperate with receptor tyrosine kinases to enhance cellular responses. To determine whether alpha(v)beta(3) regulates transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) 1-induced responses, we investigated the interaction between alpha(v)beta(3) and TGFbeta type II receptor (TGFbetaIIR) in primary human lung fibroblasts. We report that TGFbeta1 up-regulates cell surface and mRNA expression of alpha(v)beta(3) in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Patterns and universals of mate poaching across 53 nations: the effects of sex, culture, and personality on romantically attracting another person's partner.

As part of the International Sexuality Description Project, 16,954 participants from 53 nations were administered an anonymous survey about experiences with romantic attraction. Mate poaching--romantically attracting someone who is already in a relationship--was most common in Southern Europe, South America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and was relatively infrequent in Africa, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Evolutionary and social-role hypotheses received empirical support.

Retinoblastoma protein functions as a molecular switch determining white versus brown adipocyte differentiation.

Adipocyte precursor cells give raise to two major cell populations with different physiological roles: white and brown adipocytes. Here we demonstrate that the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) regulates white vs. brown adipocyte differentiation.

[Detection of abdominal infections using radio-labeled antibiotics].

The aim of the study is detection of the abdominal infective foci using 99mTc-ciprofloxacin, radiopharmaceutical supposed to distinguish inflammation from infection. Twenty-one patient was investigated. There were 11 true positive findings, 7 true negative, two were false negative, while 1 was false positive.

Aortal aneurysm as a cause of ileus.

A 62-year-old patient presented with flatulence, abdominal distension and other symptoms of ileus. Roentgenographic finding found compression on duodenum. Blood pool scintigraphy ((99m)Tc erythrocytes) showed aortal aneurysm, while simultaneous gastric emptying study with liquid meal ((99m)Tc-S-colloid) showed dislocation of duodenum and compression from abdominal aortal aneurysm.

CD13/aminopeptidase N (CD13/APN) is a potent regulator of angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo and transcription of CD13/APN in endothelial cells is induced by angiogenic growth factors via the RAS/MAPK pathway. We have explored the nuclear effectors downstream of this pathway that are responsible for CD13/APN induction. The response to serum/angiogenic growth factors mapped to a 38-bp region of the CD13/APN promoter containing an Ets-core motif that specifically binds a protein complex from nuclear lysates from activated endothelial cells.

Modeling diffraction in free-space optical interconnects by the mode expansion method.

Free-space optical interconnects (FSOIs), made up of dense arrays of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, photodetectors and microlenses can be used for implementing high-speed and high-density communication links, and hence replace the inferior electrical interconnects. A major concern in the design of FSOIs is minimization of the optical channel cross talk arising from laser beam diffraction. In this article we introduce modifications to the mode expansion method of Tanaka et al.

Universal sex differences in the desire for sexual variety: tests from 52 nations, 6 continents, and 13 islands.

Evolutionary psychologists have hypothesized that men and women possess both long-term and short-term mating strategies, with men's short-term strategy differentially rooted in the desire for sexual variety. In this article, findings from a cross-cultural survey of 16,288 people across 10 major world regions (including North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Oceania, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia) demonstrate that sex differences in the desire for sexual variety are culturally universal throughout these world regions. Sex differences were evident regardless of whether mean, median, distributional, or categorical indexes of sexual differentiation were evaluated.

[Mesenteric and splenic vein thrombosis in a female patient with essential thrombocytosis and activated protein C resistance].

Splenic venous thrombosis is a rare disease in which an underlying hypercoagulable state can often be found. A 27-years old female patient with recurrent mesenteric venous and splenic thrombosis as a severe complication of an association of resistance to activated protein C and essential thrombocythemia is presented in this report. Establishing the diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis was particularly difficult because this was the case of the so called "silent" myeloproliferative disorder.

Until recently, the only method to diagnose RSP was biological indexing on woody indicator plants, a process that takes 2 to 3 years to complete.

First Detection of Rupestris stem pitting associated virus Particles by Antibody to a Recombinant Coat Protein.

Rupestris stem pitting associated virus (RSPaV), a member of the genus Foveavirus, is associated with the Rupestris stem pitting component of the Rugose wood (RW) disease complex of grapevines. Heretofore, particles of RSPaV have not been visualized. In this work, flexuous rod particles approximately 723 nm in length were detected in the sap of infected grapevines by immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM), using a polyclonal antiserum produced to a recombinant coat protein of RSPaV.

Thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine differently affect uncoupling protein-1 content and antioxidant enzyme activities in rat interscapular brown adipose tissue.

The activity of the antioxidant enzymes copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (mGPDH) activity, uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) content, catecholamine degrading enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) concentration were studied in rat interscapular brown adipose tIssue (IBAT). Rats were treated with either thyroxine (T4) or tri-iodothyronine (T3) for five days and then exposed to cold (4 degrees C, 24 h) or housed at room temperature (22 degrees C). Under basal conditions, T3 treatment significantly increased UCP1 content and MnSOD activity whereas CuZnSOD, CAT and MAO activities were significantly decreased.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a critical step for tumor growth and metastasis and an integral component of the pathologic inflammatory response in arthritis and the proliferative retinopathies. The CD13/aminopeptidase N (CD13/APN) metalloprotease is an important regulator of angiogenesis where its expression on activated blood vessels is induced by angiogenic signals. Here, we show that cytokine induction of CD13/APN in endothelial cells is regulated by distinct Ras effector pathways involving Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) or PI-3K.

Ultrasound guided aspiration in pathological adnexal processes.

Objective: To establish the efficiency of ultrasonographically guided transvaginal adnexal cyst aspiration as a treatment and diagnostic method.

Study Design: In 72 patients with an adnexal cystic mass, transvaginal ultrasound guided cyst aspiration was performed. Before the procedure, presence of primary malignant disease was excluded by gynecologic and ultrasound examination.

A simple assay for a human serum phospholipase A2 that is associated with high-density lipoproteins.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity is usually assayed with expensive radioactive or chromogenic substrates unsuitable for performing large numbers of assays. We have designed a simple microplate assay for human serum PLA2 using the chromogenic substrate 4-nitro-3-octanoyloxy-benzoic acid. Using this substrate, serum PLA2 activity was similar to that measured with the previously characterized chromogenic phospholipid substrate 1,2-bis-heptanoylthio-glycerophosphocholine.
