In TX animals, body temperature (bt) significantly decreased, and relative IBAT mass increased as compared with control, euthyroid animals, independent of the ambient temperature. The bt fall in TX cold-exposed animals was more severe, provoking hypothermia after 4 h.

A new chromatographic medium, Convective Interaction Media(CIM) disk monolithic columns, was applied to plant virus concentration. The ability of the columns to concentrate highly diluted plant viruses was tested on a model plant virus, rod-shaped tomato mosaic virus (ToMV). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the quantitative analysis.

Noradrenaline stimulates brown pre-adipocyte proliferation and brown adipocyte differentiation. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the influence of noradrenaline on PPARgamma gene expression in brown adipocytes.

To determine whether alpha(v)beta(3) regulates transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) 1-induced responses, we investigated the interaction between alpha(v)beta(3) and TGFbeta type II receptor (TGFbetaIIR) in primary human lung fibroblasts. We report that TGFbeta1 up-regulates cell surface and mRNA expression of alpha(v)beta(3) in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Mate poaching--romantically attracting someone who is already in a relationship--was most common in Southern Europe, South America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe and was relatively infrequent in Africa, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Evolutionary and social-role hypotheses received empirical support.

Background: The aim of the study was an estimation of the relation between the gallbladder (GB) motility function and the presence and quantity of enterogastric reflux (EGR).
Material And Methods: We investigated 172 patients: 90 with physiological GB function (filling and emptying) (FGB), 21 with impaired GB function (prolonged filling and ejection fraction < 45%) and 61 with afunctional gallbladder (AGB) (without visualisation). The study was performed during 90 min (1 f/min) after i.
A 62-year-old patient presented with flatulence, abdominal distension and other symptoms of ileus. Roentgenographic finding found compression on duodenum. Blood pool scintigraphy ((99m)Tc erythrocytes) showed aortal aneurysm, while simultaneous gastric emptying study with liquid meal ((99m)Tc-S-colloid) showed dislocation of duodenum and compression from abdominal aortal aneurysm.

Helicobacter pylori infection is supposed to be one of the major causes of digestive and other diseases. Among a lot of invasive and non-invasive methods for its detection, none is ideal. The aim is an assessment of the Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach using breath test and comparison to other diagnostic methods, as well as following up the effects of therapy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCD13/aminopeptidase N (CD13/APN) is a potent regulator of angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo and transcription of CD13/APN in endothelial cells is induced by angiogenic growth factors via the RAS/MAPK pathway. We have explored the nuclear effectors downstream of this pathway that are responsible for CD13/APN induction. The response to serum/angiogenic growth factors mapped to a 38-bp region of the CD13/APN promoter containing an Ets-core motif that specifically binds a protein complex from nuclear lysates from activated endothelial cells.

A major concern in the design of FSOIs is minimization of the optical channel cross talk arising from laser beam diffraction. In this article we introduce modifications to the mode expansion method of Tanaka et al.

In this article, findings from a cross-cultural survey of 16,288 people across 10 major world regions (including North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Oceania, South/Southeast Asia, and East Asia) demonstrate that sex differences in the desire for sexual variety are culturally universal throughout these world regions. Sex differences were evident regardless of whether mean, median, distributional, or categorical indexes of sexual differentiation were evaluated.

A 27-years old female patient with recurrent mesenteric venous and splenic thrombosis as a severe complication of an association of resistance to activated protein C and essential thrombocythemia is presented in this report. Establishing the diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis was particularly difficult because this was the case of the so called "silent" myeloproliferative disorder.

Rupestris stem pitting (RSP) is the most widespread virus disease of grapevines. The genome of Rupestris stem pitting associated virus (RSPaV), the putative causal agent of RSP, was recently sequenced. Until recently, the only method to diagnose RSP was biological indexing on woody indicator plants, a process that takes 2 to 3 years to complete.

Heretofore, particles of RSPaV have not been visualized. In this work, flexuous rod particles approximately 723 nm in length were detected in the sap of infected grapevines by immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM), using a polyclonal antiserum produced to a recombinant coat protein of RSPaV.

Rats were treated with either thyroxine (T4) or tri-iodothyronine (T3) for five days and then exposed to cold (4 degrees C, 24 h) or housed at room temperature (22 degrees C). Under basal conditions, T3 treatment significantly increased UCP1 content and MnSOD activity whereas CuZnSOD, CAT and MAO activities were significantly decreased.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAngiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a critical step for tumor growth and metastasis and an integral component of the pathologic inflammatory response in arthritis and the proliferative retinopathies. The CD13/aminopeptidase N (CD13/APN) metalloprotease is an important regulator of angiogenesis where its expression on activated blood vessels is induced by angiogenic signals. Here, we show that cytokine induction of CD13/APN in endothelial cells is regulated by distinct Ras effector pathways involving Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) or PI-3K.

We have designed a simple microplate assay for human serum PLA2 using the chromogenic substrate 4-nitro-3-octanoyloxy-benzoic acid. Using this substrate, serum PLA2 activity was similar to that measured with the previously characterized chromogenic phospholipid substrate 1,2-bis-heptanoylthio-glycerophosphocholine.
