Introduction: Massive intestinal bleeding is a life threatening clinical condition that requires prompt reaction. Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) is a novel and promising therapeutic approach. The administration of rFVIIa usually represents the last therapy resort, when all other alternatives are exhausted.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) might be life-threatening in patients undergoing open heart surgery, due to thromboembolic events, thrombocytopenia and bleeding. If cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is necessary, anticoagulation therapy will be based on usage of danaparoid or direct thrombin inhibitors. Female patient was switched from per oral anticoagulant therapy to low molecular heparin therapy preparing for reredo mitral valve replacement due to endocarditis and artificial valve thrombosis.

The effects of irradiation with gamma rays and protons on HTB140 human melanoma cell morphology and viability were analyzed. Exponentially growing cells were irradiated close to the Bragg peak maximum of the 62-MeV proton beam, as well as with (60)Co gamma rays, with doses ranging from 8 to 24 Gy. The overall cell morphology was unchanged 6 and 48 h after gamma irradiation, also showing a relatively weak cell-inactivation level.

Background/aim: Modem ultrasound systems allow high-resolution transcranial sonography (TCS) of the brain structures. Enlargement of the echogenic signal (hyperechogenicity) of the substantia nigra (SN) has been reported as a highly characteristic finding in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and is thought to reflect increased amounts of iron, bound to proteins other than ferritin, in the SN in the course of neurodegeneration. The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of the SN hyperechogenicity in PD patients, as well as its possible clinical correlates.

The correlation between time dependent viabilities, after applying two radiation qualities and two alkylating agents on HTB140 melanoma cells, has been studied. Irradiations were performed with gamma-rays and 62 MeV protons, close to the Bragg peak maximum, delivering doses of 8-24 Gy. Treatments with fotemustine (FM) and dacarbazine (DTIC) were carried out with concentrations of 0.

The aim of this study has been to identify transcription factors involved in transcriptional regulation of the human SOX18 gene expression. Structural analysis revealed that the SOX18 promoter lacks a TATA box, but is CG-rich containing many putative binding sites for transcription factors that can bind and act through GC-boxes. Alignment analysis of promoter regions between human and mouse revealed conserved putative binding sites for transcription factors NF-Y and Sp-family members.

Objective: To study the use of transcranial brain parenchyma sonography (TCS), in particular the echogenic signal in the substantia nigra (SN), in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), recently recognized as an uncommon cause of parkinsonism.

Methods: Six consecutive and unrelated SCA2 patients without parkinsonian signs, 30 consecutive patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), and 30 healthy, age- and sexmatched controls were prospectively studied with TCS according to a standardized protocol.

Results: Four (67 %) of the six SCA2 patients exhibited SN hyperechogenicity.

Background: Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) concentrations predict outcome in patients with acute coronary syndromes. PAPP-A levels and PAPP-A/pro-MBP ratio are increased in chronic stable angina (CSA) patients with complex coronary artery stenoses. Little is known however, about the long-term prognostic value of PAPP-A and pro-MBP in "real-life" CSA patients.

SOX proteins constitute a large family of diverse and well conserved transcription factors implicated in the control of various developmental processes. Previously we have cloned and characterized human SOX3, SOX14 and SOX18 genes and performed functional characterization of their promoter regions. To better understand organization and function of SOX3, SOX14 and SOX18 promoters and to determine evolutionary conserved regulatory regions, we performed comparative genomic analyses of orthologous genes promoters.

Seven or fourteen days or twelve months after suturing one tube into the pyloric sphincter (removed by peristalsis by the seventh day), rats exhibit prolonged esophagitis with a constantly lowered pressure not only in the pyloric, but also in the lower esophageal sphincter and a failure of both sphincters. Throughout the esophagitis experiment, gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 (PL 14736) is given intraperitoneally once a day (10 microg/kg, 10 ng/kg, last application 24 h before assessment), or continuously in drinking water at 0.16 microg/ml, 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effects of fotemustine (FM) and dacarbazine (DTIC) on human HTB140 melanoma cells after proton irradiation, looking at varying drug concentrations and irradiation doses.
  • After treatment with both drugs and proton irradiation, cell viability was assessed over time, showing that increased drug concentration or irradiation led to about 60% cell inactivation.
  • Results indicated that HTB140 cells are more resistant to proton therapy compared to the alkylating agents tested, and combining FM or DTIC with proton irradiation didn't significantly enhance the effectiveness compared to using each treatment alone.

We report a simple novel rat model that combines prolonged esophagitis and parallel sphincters failure. The anti-ulcer gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157, which was found to be stable in gastric juice, and is being evaluated in inflammatory bowel disease trials, is an anti-esophagitis therapy that recovers failed sphincters. Twelve or twenty months after the initial challenge (tubes sutured into sphincters for one week and then spontaneously removed by peristalsis), rats exhibit prolonged esophagitis (confluent hemorrhagic and yellowish lesions, thinner epithelium and superficial corneal layer, with stratification derangement); constantly lowered pressure of both sphincters (assessed by using a water manometer connected to the drainage port of a Foley catheter implanted into the stomach either through esophageal or duodenal incision); and both lower esophageal and pyloric sphincter failure.

Most cases of early-onset primary torsion dystonia are caused by the same 3-bp (GAG) deletion in the DYT1 gene. We describe a large Serbian family with significant intrafamilial variability of the DYT1 phenotype, from asymptomatic carrier status to late-onset focal, and generalized jerky dystonia. Seven mutation carriers (six proven by direct analysis and one by inferred haplotype) were identified, but only two of them were affected by dystonia (penetrance reduced to 29%).
