Background: Schizoaffective disorder (SAD) is one of the most complex and controversial diagnoses in clinical psychiatry. Despite the significant changes that have occurred in the conceptualization of SAD in modern classifications and the publications of recent years, many unresolved issues remain regarding the disease, from the point of view of clinical psychiatry and basic neuroscience.

Aim: The purpose of this paper is to summarize published data on the concept of SAD, its clinical characteristics, cognitive profile, potential biomarkers, as well as the place of the disease in the following modern international classifications: the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 9, 10 and 11 revisions, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 edition (DSM-5).

DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) is a key effector of non-homologous end joining (NHEJ)-mediated double-strand break (DSB) repair. Since its identification, a substantial body of evidence has demonstrated that DNA-PK is frequently overexpressed in cancer, plays a critical role in tumor development and progression, and is associated with poor prognosis in cancer patients. Recent studies have also uncovered novel functions of DNA-PK, shifting the paradigm of the role of DNA-PK in oncogenesis and renewing interest in targeting DNA-PK for cancer therapy.

Current researches on pesticides in wetlands are limited in terms of screening and quantification of many types of pesticides. Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics, distribution patterns, and environmental risks of pesticides in multiple media is important for wetland ecological conservation. In this study, 222 pesticides were determined in multimedia samples collected simultaneously from the Songhua Wetland during four seasons.

Background: A population-based method for estimating disease burden is commonly used. Nevertheless, these measurements do not entirely capture the comprehensive burden of illness on an individual patient. To address the problem, the Individual Burden of Illness Index (IBI index) Index was created and validated, specifically for major depressive disorder.

With the improvement of medical devices for diagnosis and radiotherapy, concerns about the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation are also growing. There is no consensus among scientists on whether they might have beneficial effects on humans in certain cases or pose more risks, making the exposure unreasonable. While the damaging consequences of high-dose radiation have been known since the discovery of radioactivity, low-dose effects present a much bigger investigative challenge.

This paper presents a unique 12-year case analysis of a girl with Penta-X syndrome, a chromosomal abnormality characterized by five X chromosomes instead of the normal two in healthy women. Pentasomy of X is a genetic, but not a hereditary disease affecting only women. Our patient demonstrated delayed mental, speech, and motor development along with physical anomalies such as craniofacial deformities, and eye pathology and was diagnosed with pentasomy of the X chromosome at the age of 3 after a cytogenetic examination.

A novel facultatively anaerobic moderately thermophilic bacteria, strains 4137-Me and 4148-Me, were isolated from hot springs of Karmadon and Ursdon, respectively (North Ossetia, Russian Federation). Gram-negative, motile rods were present singly, in pairs, rosettes, and aggregates, or formed biofilms. Both strains grew optimally at 50-55 °C, pH 7.

Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (CNO) is a rare but devastating complication of diabetes associated with high rates of morbidity; yet, many nonfoot specialists are unaware of it, resulting in missed and delayed diagnosis. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have proven useful in improving quality of care and standardizing practice in diabetes and diabetic foot care. However, little is known about the consistency in recommendations for identification and management of active CNO.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common gastrointestinal emergency among neonates which is characterized by acute intestinal inflammation and necrosis. The main risk factors for NEC are prematurity, low birth weight, and some preexisting health conditions such as congenital heart defects (CHDs). Investigation of the potential genetic predisposition to NEC is a promising approach that might provide new insights into its pathogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Deep periorbital burns are critical due to their proximity to the eyes, impacting vision preservation, and treatment approaches lack consensus.
  • A study analyzed 446 patients with deep periorbital burns over a decade, revealing most were caused by hot liquids and flames, and 14% had pre-existing eye issues.
  • The preferred treatment involved early and careful surgery for quick wound closure, resulting in a low incidence of long-term eye complications and no vision loss when managed promptly.

Background: Research data on hospitalized coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) survivors indicate the persistence of symptoms, radiological abnormalities, and physiological disorders months after the initial infection. Given the scale of the ongoing pandemic, a substantial number of patients with severe residual pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and oxygen dependence are anticipated. Currently, the search for risk factors associated with the development of fibrotic radiological abnormalities after moderate to severe COVID-19 is underway.

Resistance to carbapenems has become a problem due to (), harboring carbapenemases. Among them, there are isolates that are recognized as carbapenem-susceptible; however, these carbapenemase-producing strains with low meropenem minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) may pose a threat to public health. We aimed to investigate the impact of the ability to produce carbapenemases by a bacterial isolate on the effectiveness of meropenem in the hollow-fiber infection model.
