This study evaluated the properties of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PEO-PnBA-PAA) polymeric micelles as carriers for anti-inflammatory drugs (prednisolone and budesonide). The micelles comprising a hydrophobic PnBA core and a PEO/PAA corona showed average diameter less than 40 nm. The size of the drug-loaded micelles did not change during eight hours into media that mimic physiological fluids indicating high colloidal stability.

One of the unresolved issues of the European Water Framework Directive is the unavailability of realistic water reference materials for the organic priority pollutants at low nanogram-per-liter concentrations. In the present study, three different types of ready-to-use water test materials were developed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tributyltin (TBT) at nanogram-per-liter levels. The first type simulated the dissolved phase in the water and comprised of a solution of humic acids (HA) at 5 mg L(-1) dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and a spike of the target compounds.

The problem of the sound propagation in shallow-water waveguide with a seabottom featuring canyon-type inhomogeneity of a specific form is considered. The sound pressure in such waveguide is represented in a form of modal expansion and the equations for modal coefficients are derived. In case of a single-mode adiabatic propagation, it is possible to neglect the mode interaction and omit the coupling terms in these equations.

A novel approach for the preparation of nano- and microcapsules in aqueous solutions by using thermoresponsive polymer (TRP) templates (mesoglobules) is described. The method comprised three steps: formation of mesoglobules, coating the templates by seeded radical copolymerization, followed by core dissolution and core removal upon cooling. When mesoglobule entraps biomacromolecules during the process of their formation, it makes it possible to load a controlled amount of bioactive compounds without covalent attachment.

Prefrontal neurons code many kinds of behaviourally relevant visual information. In behaving monkeys, we used a cued target detection task to address coding of objects, behavioural categories and spatial locations, examining the temporal evolution of neural activity across dorsal and ventral regions of the lateral prefrontal cortex (encompassing parts of areas 9, 46, 45A and 8A), and across the two cerebral hemispheres. Within each hemisphere there was little evidence for regional specialisation, with neurons in dorsal and ventral regions showing closely similar patterns of selectivity for objects, categories and locations.

The process of molecular self-assembly plays a crucial role in formulation of polymeric nanoparticulated drug delivery carriers as it creates the possibility for enhanced drug encapsulation and carrier surface engineering. This study aimed to develop a novel self-assembled polymeric micelles for targeted delivery in tumor cells in order to overcome not only various drawbacks of 7-ethyl-10-hydroxy camptothecin (SN-38) but also various reported limitations of other drug delivery systems, especially low drug loading and premature release. Methodology for absolute Mo isotope amount ratio measurements by multicollector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) using calibration with synthetic isotope mixtures (SIMs) is presented. For the first time, synthetic isotope mixtures prepared from seven commercially available isotopically enriched molybdenum metal powders ((92)Mo, (94)Mo, (95)Mo, (96)Mo, (97)Mo, (98)Mo, and (100)Mo) are used to investigate whether instrumental mass discrimination of Mo isotopes in MC-ICP-MS is consistent with mass-dependent isotope distribution. The parent materials were dissolved and mixed as solutions to obtain mixtures with accurately known isotope amount ratios.

Effective negative capacitance has been postulated in ferroelectrics because there is a hysteresis in plots of polarization-electric field. Compelling experimental evidence of effective negative capacitance is presented here at room temperature in engineered devices, where it is stabilized by the presence of a paraelectric material. In future integrated circuits, the incorporation of such negative capacitance into MOSFET gate stacks would reduce the subthreshold slope, enabling low power operation and reduced self-heating.

A series of aminoalcohols were synthesized by reaction of aminolysis of camphor derived oxiranes with chosen amines. Aims: This study evaluated the measurement invariance of the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) self-report among adolescents from seven different nations.

Methods: Data for 2367 adolescents, aged 13-18 years, from India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Serbia, Turkey, Bulgaria and Croatia were available for a series of factor analyses.

Results: The five-factor model including original SDQ scales emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity-inattention problems, peer problems and prosocial behaviour generated inadequate fit degree in all countries.

Further developments of antibacterial coatings based on photocatalytic nanomaterials could be a promising route towards potential environmentally friendly applications in households, public buildings and health care facilities. We hypothesized that newly formed osteoclasts from patients with acute Charcot osteoarthropathy can resorb surfaces of bone more extensively compared with controls. Peripheral blood monocytes, isolated from eight Charcot patients and nine controls, were cultured in vitro on 24-well plates and bovine bone discs in duplicate with macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator of nuclear factor κβ ligand (RANKL). Trans-membrane (or T cell) immunoglobulin and mucin (TIM) molecules are known regulators of immune response whose function in hematopoiesis is unknown. Earlier, we found that tim-1 and tim-4 are expressed by CD45(+) cells in the para-aortic region of chicken embryo. Because the para-aortic region is a known site for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) and hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) differentiation and expansion, we hypothesize that TIM molecules have a role in hematopoiesis.

Original pH sensitive cryogels, based on two biodegradable natural polymers chitosan (CS) and 2-hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), were obtained via cryogenic treatment of semi-dilute aqueous solutions and UV induced crosslinking in frozen state. H₂O₂ and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (BisAAm) were used as photoinitiator and crosslinking agent, respectively. BisAAm facilitated the formation of polymer co-network and increased both the gel fraction yield and mechanical strength of cryogels.

Production of a rhamnolipid biosurfactant by cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain BN10 immobilized into poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polyacrylamide (PAAm) cryogels was investigated under semicontinuous shake flask conditions and compared to biosurfactant secretion by free cells. The biosurfactant synthesis was followed over 9 cycles of operation of the immobilized system, each cycle comprising 7 days at ambient temperature and neutral pH.
